I've noticed black spots on some of the combs and wattles over the last week or so. I tried to look it up but getting lots of possibilities. I've come across the possibility of pox and notes. Could you give me your opinion? Thanks!

Am I correct in saying this is something that just runs its course? Is there anything I did to cause it? Could it have been prevented? Is it fatal often?

Fowl pox is common in summer and fall when mosquitoes are out. It can be worse in hot humid areas, such as the South. Here in the Ohio Valley, we rarely see it, and I have only seen a single scab on a hen or two in the last 6-7 years. Leave scabs alone, or risk spreading the disease. Separate the ones with pox if possible. A pox vaccine is available in areas prone to the disease, but only for those not yet exposed.
