Possibly taking dog on trip, any advice?

Sometimes longer trips than what the dog is used to can cause them to get car sick so you can ask your vet for dramamine for dogs (they make that ya know

). However if you take regular breaks and make them at least 20-30 mins in length for each they should be ok. Good luck and take lots of pictures

When we lived up north, we used to take a 12 hour trip at least once a year with our dogs. (when we went to visit family) for seven years. They travelled well,, we always had their crates in the back of the explorer. Just remember to take lotsa short breaks (like every 3-4 hours) for a little stretch and walk. Bring water and her bowl, and offer her some water every time you stop.

We have taken our little schnoodle on vacation, she is 2 1/2 years old and weighs about 15 pounds. We took her for a week long trip to St. Augustine and she loved it!
Just remember to also take something to scoop up the poop with and something to put it in like those little bags with the canisters that you can pick up at any pet store or Wal-Mart, K-Mart, etc.

I hadn't thought about a harness, we'll have to get one. She does slip out of her collar every once in awhile.

Make sure you have your CELL phone number on the id tag or microchip.
We went camping once (puppy was a week old) and realized that the tag with our house number wouldn't help much if we weren't home! Duh!

Take a doggy first aid kit, stuff like you might normally have around the house/barn you won't have on the road. Also you might want to find out where the local emergency vet is for the town you will be staying in. My dog is car stupid, and gets hyper excited about trips, so potty breaks around cars scare the bejeebus out of me!

I fed my dog Gatorade on a long trip besides water. Once we got stuck behind a semi truck on a winding mountain road in August. What normally would have been a super-breezy 30 minute trip, ended up being a hot and sunny hour long trip! We tried Pedalite but she wouldn't drink it (I wouldn't either, it tastes like salt water) she prefers the plain, red punch flavor. You might want to carry something for the dog in the cooler if it could be any hot at all. Either her local water, or bottle water, or Gatorade if your dog will drink it.

Taking your dog can be fun, if you don't mind accommodating him/her on enough "potty stops" to keep it comfy.

I keep an old heavy blanket sacked in the hatchback of my car for all kinds of emergencies and hauling. That comes out when I used to haul my dogs and covered the entire back seat.

I tried to take their own dishes and food, a couple of favorite toys, to give them so connections to home.
