My son just came in from the barn and said that he spooked a very large possum in there.

Are possums predators?
Worry more about eggs/chicks or hens?

Ugh!

Great and I was just bragging that our barn was so safe...that's what I get for opening my big mouth.

Well, DH will be camping out in barn tomorrow night to dispatch it.

Drat!

Oh, yeah! They will kill chickens and eat eggs. They used to wreak havock in our coop if we shut the pop-door late and they got in, dead chickens and for sure no eggs in the morning, with a possum curled up full, contented, and soundly asleep in the nest in the am. Our airedale would clear him/her out of there in quick order. They can snarl and look pretty wicked, but are really interesting critters. I'm not one who likes to see the native inhabitants killed for doing what comes naturally. Protect your chickens with appropriate fencing, shut them in at night (like, RIGHT at sunset), etc. Good luck, Chris
PS: this was in Indiana. We don't have possums here, alas!
