Post-Bumblefoot surgery

so im giving him bird amoxicillin powder 10% and I’ll do half a teaspoon in his water and 1/4 teaspoon by mouth. Right now his foot is wrapped up with a thick gauze and he’s in a little box I made for my GF when their in posture. I filled his box with wood chips and lime. And no he can’t kick any wire or anything like that he has some pretty bad scabs he got from a cage fight with a hen (so random Ik) 🤣 but the Bumblefoot didn’t show up until we had a hurricane that flooded the coop. And yeah his foot is moist with the ointment and I’ve been using Hibiclens to gently clean his whole foot.
If he doesn't heal up, then I'd switch to Baytril for the antibiotic.

Try letting the foot dry out a bit, wrap it for protection and to keep it clean, (swab with Chlorhexidine daily and change the wrapping daily), but omit the ointment for a few days.

Omit the Peroxide completely. It's good for an initial cleaning sometimes, but repeated use can damage healthy tissue and slow the healing process.

I’ll do 2 more days of the amoxicillin and use the clorhexadine only and Lee you updated thankyou very much

Alright, I hope he can pull through!

Hi, hope this post finds you all well! Just wanted to come on here to show what his foot is looking like currently. I have stopped applying Triple antibiotic ointment. Now I only use Chlorhexidine to cleanse the foot and give him antibiotic. Also I want to ask if it’s a good idea to use clindamycin phosphate topical solution instead of amoxicillin. I just don’t want to keep him on antibiotics for too long

To me, it looks better.

I don't know about the Clindamycin solution, @Eggcessive or @coach723 may know.

Amoxicillin is given for 7-10 days.

If by pressure you mean weight yes he has really fluffy bedding and isn’t stepping on any hard surfaces and his wrapping isn’t too tight it’s not squeezing his foot. I thought the black was just a scab tho. Correct me if I’m wrong

I agree that is a scab and nothing serious. I only know about clindamycin given orally. It is used for bone infections and for teeth problems in dogs and cats. I would use amoxicillin if needed, but that may heal on its’s own with using the antibiotic ointment you are using already.

I've not had much luck with clindamycin for bumblefoot specifically, I have only used it orally. I used it long term once to treat a suspected bone infection and just had to monitor droppings for changes and adjust dosing as needed. The bird lived years afterwards with no apparent issues. To me it appears that the upper part (closer to the toes) is healing, not sure about the lower part. It may just be bruising from the surgery etc, I can't really tell. I would continue what you are doing, and keep an eye on it. If that lower part starts to look worse, the black is spreading, it swells, or smells bad (I smell wounds every time I change dressings-if it's bad you'll know), then I would soak the foot, remove the scab, and pack it with sugardine daily and redress. I've had very good results with sugardine on some very bad bumblefoot cases.
