My best black langshan hen started exhibiting signs of being egg bound a few days ago. I gave her calcium and manipulated the egg out of her without any issues (just a lot of work!) and now she's resting separate from the rest of the breeding group. I have her on strictly a maintenance diet only, she's getting cracked corn only, no layer mash to keep her from laying right now. So far, she hasn't tried to lay an egg and is progressing nicely. I was just wondering if anyone has any experience with caring for a hen after the passage of the egg and if you've had any luck getting them laying again without issue. It disappoints me that my best hen may not be a breeder after all.

I've had many a Silkie hen that couldn't pass an egg. I would run warm water and use baby oil to help while I slipped my finger up inside her. I'd hook my finger around the egg and pop it out. The hen will start pushing a lot while you do this.

I make sure to feed my hens white bread on a daily basis. No green or mold on the bread either. I also keep crushed oyster shells put out for them to eat as well. My Moran hen loves egg shells. I wash them really well under hot water and let them dry. Then I crush them up for her to eat.

So you had luck with them laying again after the egg getting stuck? I'm worried she'll just keep getting egg bound!! Thanks for your advice. As for the white bread, what exactly does that do? Or is it just a treat...

They need calcium for the shell making! I feed mine the white bread because they don't like any other kind! LOL It's a waste of money if I throw out wheat to them. They turn their noses up at it and walk off from it.

I read in a chicken book! The shell is actually made from a chicken's bones. That's why they need the calcium put back into their systems. If an egg has bumps on it? Then they are getting too much calcium. I never fed my chickens the egg laying pellets. They always got plenty of bread for eating.
