I do not vaccinate my chicks. I do not use medicated feeds.

My understanding of the organic rules is that vaccinations are permitted.

Integrated pest and disease management should work just as well as vaccination.

Our amprolium medicated chicks got the nasties a few months back, now I'm implementing some integrated pest management which has a great side effect of nearly eliminating the flies!

When we got our first flock, I discussed Marek's with our vet. She doesn't take chickens as patients, but she does raise them. She lives within a mile of our farm. She suggested I vaccinate our hatchery chicks for Marek's. Because I trust her, I did.

Everyone has to decide for themselves the best way to raise their flocks.

i have never vaccinated against mereks or cocci. i use medicated feed and have never had a prob with either one. only birds i get from 1 breeder r mereks vaccinated as day olds when i get them so part of my flock is vaccinated for mereks most r not. u can buy the vaccine online but it is 1,000 dos vials.

i do vaccinate my birds when 4 weeks of age or older for ILT, IB and Newcastle disease. they r also 1,000 dos vials. if the live vaccines r not used in 1 hour or less the rest gets incinerated. it is a waste to some but i have been through the real deal of ILT and IB awhile back. trust me i don't care i waste the extra it is very well worth it to protect my flock from the horrors and me and my children from the heartache and the nightmare we went through.

i love my flock they r my babies if that's what it takes to save even 1 life its very well worth takeing the time and the money or anything else to do it. we didn't used to vaccinate and brought it to our flock from show stock brought in. we learned hard and quick all it takes is 1 just 1 bird to bring something in even after quarenteen and looking normal no signs of anything. we highly reccomend vaccination to anyone for their poultry to protect them and strict bio security measures. i'd never want anyone to go through the things we have had to in the past.
