This little guy hatched this morning, he's the first one to hacth so I don't know what the hacth rate will be. This would be my first sucessful broody hen. He's a blue cochin.

Here are 2 photos from my first hatch with an incubator a few years back, I now hatch twice every spring. They are cochins, a mix a black, blue, white, and partridge and my hacth rate was 95%

Ive always used a Broody hen, once in the spring & again in the fall,
But now I have an incubator....Im tryin it out in the HOT Summer months.

so took it in my office.
Im SURPRISE I got ANY to hatch out! & Thankful!!

By the way, my favorite chick picture is probably my avatar. And your's are so cute, I love the all the different colors, I bet they will be some real pretty chickens!
He/she is a cutie!!...whats wrong with the leg??...straddle?
heard & read bout alot of different thangs that can go wrong with the new chicks,
had to make sure I learned bout EVERYTHING, just in case!!

Thanx, luv the different colors & prints too!!

The chick in the photo dislocated her achilles tendon. I had to negotiate it back into place and wrap it to keep it from going back. The poor baby, that is one of the worst injuries for a chick, must have been in so much pain but I was kinda proud of him. He got over it about 3 weeks later. I had one other chick that did that and I was unable to put it back in place no matter how hard I tried, and who is going to pay the $40 vet fee for a chick. Well she's still in my barn tonight, hobbling around not using her leg, it's deformed by this point, but she still lays eggs and is a great hen.

For my incubator, I keep the humidity around 40 - 45%. I find that works best for me, and then the last three days, I raise it to 65%. But the first time I hatched, the directions said to simply fill the middle tray with water, and on the last 3 days, fill the outer tray. I didn't even have a hydronometer then but got a hacth rate of 95%, so it worked. I just have the cheap styrofoam HovaBator without any extras like egg turners or forced air fans. I think I payed $30 and it can hold up to 42 eggs, but it really does work. I read others complaining about their incubators that they spend upwards of $300 for them.

As far as my broody, I actually have a slight problem. There are 8 eggs and another one hatched yesterday, and I knew it would but the others are behind. 4 of them look like they won't hatch for another 4 days, and the last 2 are even farther behind, one looking like it's at day 7. I guess she layed 2 extras when I took out the duds and I don't know why the other 4 would be behind. I'm worried now that she has 2 chicks, she'll give up on her eggs even though they are very much alive.

...definately gonna put in my "chick journal"!!!

I keep my incubator bout the same as u....temp 100* & humidity at 45*

& if ur hen gives up...u can put the eggs in the bator if u have room!!

Got my Phoenix eggs Saturday....Amanda sent me 13!!
Box & eggs had NO DAMAGE!!

But ALL the eggs air cell was broken with lots of tiny bubbles!!
hit.gif

Let them settle for 24 hours....3 had to b tossed due to 1 no air bubble, 2 embryo was detached, on the bottom!
Put the rest in the bottom of the bator (no turnin)

read that "Miracles" can happen....so Im goin to try & see if it works!!
