Post Pics Of Orps/ Orpingtons HERE

Nice birds..that roo in the pen looks body wise just like 2 of our top buff breeder Roo's here, however i like our combs better on our birds as they are a bit smaller, we try to keep and breed for bit smaller combs to match our colder climates here in pa..less frost bite issues..also gotta nice Lil batch of buff grow outs as well coming along..

when the molts are over will get some fresh updates of some of them and the youngens....

I'll ask a genetic question as well: Is a Black Orp form B/B/S mating genetically the same as a Black from pure Black lines? Specifically, when crossing Lavenders out to black for improvement of type as several on here seem to be doing, will you get the same split results and following generation if you were to use a Black out of a B/B/S mating?

If they're visibly Black from a BBS breeding, then they're just that- Black. They can't carry the Blue gene, it can't be hidden, when it's there it will always be expressed.

However, you can have a visibly Black bird carrying the recessive Lav gene, like OSUman mentioned though, they're basically the same.

In B/B/S the type is set and has been for generations. In the Lav the type is still considered a project by many. We have two splits that appear black, yet they should produce 25% lav gene when mated together. I would not want to keep any blacks from this mating, unless they showed good type. They will be toe punched so we know that they are from the lav breeding. Ours seem to have good type, but will have to wait and see on their offspring.

At a local 200 bird show the pullet placed RB and the cockerel placed RV. BB was a Buff. The judge was surprised to learn their sire was the Self Blue male we had entered. They do have good genes. Their grandsire and grandams did hatch out of Cecil Moore eggs.

Can I get some input on my girl, Olive? I bought her from a breeder at a show. He wasn't selling them , so I had to find the man who won B.O.B. - Just really wanted a BO! Don't really care either way, but wondering if she looks nice. Oh and she was spring hatch. He said April or May.

Since these have been taken, she lost her few tail feathers that look odd in the images

Any idea on age? She hasn't laid an egg yet, but is getting redder in the face.

She looks nice for her hatch date. She is considered a late hatch for Orps and may never reach her full potential size. Terry Britt told me taht the late hatch will carry the genetics and their offspring, if hatched in wmid to late winter, will reach theirs. What breeder did you get her from? That will say more about what you have than almost anything.

She could be even March. Not 100% sure. She's the biggest of my chickens
