I'm selling this young guy and a hen this week, seen as how they don't have the mottling gene and I have another boy growing out that does. He's finally getting some girth to him. It seems like the BBS are "round" at a much younger age. Or maybe its just that color is deceiving.

It's because they are a "project" bird. Most that have this "project orpington" will tell you they do not meet the standard in type at all for Orpingtons. It's going to take lots of breedings to get this color "orp" to a size note worthy of Orpington by using good black Orps. Cullng out the undesireable straits.

He's the result of several back-to-black breedings from really good orp lines. Finally filling out, but I have seen so many out there still that are on the narrow side. Seems people are in too much of a hurry just to have the lavender. I am having the opposite problem in my lavender ameraucanas- they're too big

All too true. I can't recall but one or two lavenders I've seen that I'd have as a finished bird. And I'm not going to work on a line.

If it was me i would go with #2... My least favorite is #3... he's off, and i really don't like the type of tail, nor how he holds it! #1 would be my back up, if it were me. but #2 seams to have possibility, i would actually like to see what he could throw in a generation or two mixed up with a nice black hen or two, then the off spring crossed to bring out the lavenders. but even still hes not bad, better orpington type then many... its the tails that flag to me... lavenders seam to have very sqirrly tails

Thanks, that's just what I'm going to do. I do have some quality eggs in the incubator now, hope to get some nice blacks that I'll use with my lavs.
