that is just too cute for words..nothing more fun to watch than a good broody...she looks like tiger mommy..not much would get by her..i love it when they reach over like a backhoe and tuck that baby under themselves...i always have tubs of scrambled eggs around..had a scrambled egg feeding frenzy this morning..everyone grabs a chunk and runs around like they won the lottery, or somone might steal theres thou there is pleanty for everybody , thanks to australorp hen donations..
i swear they double in size overnight..i opened the A frame this morning and thought boy you guys are getting big fast..

My broody orpington, Gloria, has accepted the chicks that we tucked under her this weekend! I'm glad, because when we pulled the eggs (or rather, most of the eggs) out from under her and slipped the first 3 chicks under her she tried to peck me, hard! Fortunately it was dark and she missed, but I shudder to think what would happen to one of the babies if she had hit them with a blow like that.

Gloria, keeping a wary eye on me and the camera:

No, I don't think much would get past her. In fact, they were sitting in a box with shavings and hay until about 30 minutes before this picture. One of the chicks had gotten out of the box and couldn't get back in, and she wasn't moving off that nest for anything. I was actually a little scared to stick my hand in there to put the chick back in. So I just turned Gloria and the remaining chicks out onto the floorboards. She never moved! And my dog just didn't understand why I wasn't letting him come in close for a good look. I tried explaining to him that he'd loose his nose if he got any closer!

How do you judge good qualities on an Orp. Or in other words, I'm getting my new laying hens this spring and hoping to find some orps as well. How can I judge if they're meet the orp standard. I've had them before and love them but the roosters were not so nice looking.

Hi, my advice would be to purchase your orps from a reputable Orpington breeder who shows to the APA standard. Orpington roosters of good type are big and beautiful birds.

Roosters are always a little freaky looking to me. Get yourself a copy of the standard of perfection, take it outside, and compare your birds to it.

How many birds do you have in that pen??? Egg food goes bad quickly.... You don't want to put into the pen more than what can be eaten up in a short amount of time. Otherwise... the egg lays there goes rancid.... your birds eat it and they die! OR... it can attract unwanted insects like ants. Ants can kill your chicks. I learned this from raising canaries many many yrs ago.
