Post Pics Of Orps/ Orpingtons HERE

Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you--Goliath...

He refused to stand still, so you can't quite tell just how beautiful he is. He's only about 6-7 months old, so he still has plenty of growing out to do.

This is one of Hall Family Farm's offspring. He's not even fully grown and he's already very large!

OMGOSH. He's GORGEOUS!

I wanted to share some pictures of my English Orps. They are about to turn 10weeks old in a couple days and I just love them to death. They're so soft and fluffy, but unfortunately, they're pretty flighty ATM. I had so many chicks hatching this fall that I didn't have as much time as I should have to handle them and make them friendly.

Luckily, my daughter was visiting this weekend and she spent lots of time holding them and forcing them [against their will at times] to cuddle and sit on her lap.

They are free ranging for the first time ever today. I've been too scared of hawks and predators to let them out before now, and I'm sure I made the mistake in not letting them out sooner as they won't move away from the coop...I don't want to stress them, and I'm hoping they figure out that being out in the yard is fun!

I'm thinking at this point, they're all going to be girls, they've stayed relatively close in size and nobody has grown bright red waddles yet [FX they are hens! I've got another set of 7 that I'm hoping to have a rooster or two out of]

I give you; Bella [the blue with the sweet face], Beauty [the other blue] & Beast [The splash]

Sweet babies!

They're sweet. Ah...she's not a beast.

How about Mrs Pots to stay with the theme? Or the French Maid's name (can't remember) since she'll have a feather duster tail coming in soon.

OMG.

I heard the chickens freaking out so I ran to look out the back window and there was a bloody HAWK sitting on top of their coop calling all it's buddies to tell them about the fresh chicken meat in the backyard....

I think I may have had temporary heart failure.

Thankfully I went running out there, screaming like a banshee and the hawk flew off.

He was ON TOP OF THEIR COOP, less than 10 feet from my back door!!

Nobody was injured, and the hawk wasn't that large, he would have had problems taking off with one of my full grown hens, and in fact, I thought that he was a chicken at first! It took a moment for my brain to process that my chickens aren't brown, and they don't have long tail feathers!

I put the babies back in the coop immediately, and now I'm scared to let them out ever again!

I'm mad that I didn't think to grab the air rifle, it was a clean shot and I've loaded the darn thing with hollow points so I could have killed it, but in my panic I didn't think.

Hawks are migrating, so you might need to watch for a while. They should be OK and you will feel better if you supervise outings for the first couple of days out.

Thanks. I just can't get my heart to stop pounding.

The migrating part makes sense as I've only ever seen one hawk in our area. The land in front of us is farm fields so there's no good dead animals for the hawks out there.

I saw one flying over the yard a few weeks ago, he was low, but I chased him off waving a broom at him.

Good gracious, I'm all worked up over this now...thinking of ways to build an enclosed run and suck.
