Post Pics Of Orps/ Orpingtons HERE

You can string out Christmas tree lights for now. It will be OK..It is part of chicken keeping..not a good part, but a part non the less. Let you chicks out to forage, let them be chickens. Chickens are smart. As long as you have places for them to scurry and hide, they do will with self preservation. Hawks and Eagles do not like change. If you change something in your yard it makes them uncomfortable. They are also wary of predators. A Hawk will watch sometimes for days before a strike. He was probably just watching. Your crazy running and screaming probably will be enough determent.

Oh Thank you!

LOL. I'm still so new to this and have sunk so much money into these babies, I'm like a mom trying to coddle them, I think.

The babies were hidden under the nesting box, I guess my question is, will this be enough? Will the hawk get on the ground and chase them? Or will they be safe under there?

Hawks are migrating, so you might need to watch for a while. They should be OK and you will feel better if you supervise outings for the first couple of days out.

They're definitely on the move right now. I've had 4 circling for the past 3 days. I read somewhere that an adult will try to snatch one weighing up to 8 lbs. Don't know if that's true or not. I would watch the little ones.

Thank you! It is nice to see new faces interested in Orps.

I'm around, I just don't come on here as much as I should! lol. I'm still very new at all of this. I started in April with a mixed breed flock, lost them all within the month to URD, and since I had no idea what I was getting into, it took some time for me to get new birds. A friend of mine picked up some BOs in Jersey and I took 3 home, but I've started in with the english orps. I just love the sweet faces and friendly nature!

Now if I could just get my BOs to lay!
