Post Pics Of Orps/ Orpingtons HERE

Now that picture of the Silver Marans Cock makes me think that they both might both be, at least partial, barred birchen. I wonder if Dick was crossing in BC Marans into his Cuckoos in attempt to make them better.
Jon Nicalandia is now posting. He is one of BYC's best in genetics. IF you follow his posts you can learn alot about how to build the color varieties you were talking about wanting to make. I told him I plan of using this Cuckoo male with my 2 Columbian looking pullets. Here is some insite of what he thinks this Cuckoo is and what the out come will be.
Again this is on the Buff Orpington thread.

"Now the Unusually marked cuckoo male is a E/eWh cross male looks like, he is also a silver heterozygote meaning it has one copy of Silver and one copy of gold thats why he has the yellow saddle and hackle colors, if mated to buff columbian females you have chances of hatching silver columbian females(barred and none barred) and gold columbian females(barred and none barred) Gold columbian roosters(barred and none barred) Golden columbian rooster(S/s+ like dad) that will look like silver columbian(barred and none barred) upto adulthood when they start showing the yellow lemon color of such S/s+ male cross. you will also be hatching black chicks, barred and none barred... thats alot of genotypes and phenotypes so if you want any of the posted phenotypes(looks of birds) you would have to hatch at least 50 chicks.."

Just got back to Oklahoma for a week. Spring break. Came at a good time. Needed a little break. Don't know how I taught school for 37 years.

Enjoy your week off. I am setting some of my buff eggs with the black. Can't wait to see the chicks. The chicks I hatched a few weeks ago have a crazy appetite. I finally moved them up to big kid feeders since I was refilling at least twice a day.

Bill I was just telling you what I thought they might be, from my limited knowledge of the Marans breed and how some of the varieties came to existence. I personally think that you will get more Black or Birchen looking birds from that cross, but I guess you will find out. I thought you were going to focus on the standardized varieties.

Jon one of the possibilities is a pure Silver or White looking bird which I can take to my White Orps. Marvin also said pure Black. Both of those are possible. With the type from this cockerel would be a nice thought of using. I have one pullet from this combo. She is barred with some Buff. She does have this cockerels build. So, I may hit a homerun or just strike out. IF I hatch 50 the chances I will hit one or two who can be used back to the standard Whites. IF SIlver I would never have to worry about the problem of yellowing that many Whites get when outside.

Any whites from that cross would have a bad problem of being to brassy, I dont know where you could get a home run from with that cross

Harry says if their a true Silver they will clean out the Brassinees. Just ask Harry. He has the Silver gene in his Cuckoos and has used them for this purpose. So, yes give me as many pure Silvers as possible. You can also ask Doug if his White Rocks have the brassiness problem. He went outta his way to tell me they do not. He knew I wanted to make White orps. That again is because of the Silver gene.
HI HO SILVER TO STAY!

Then wont have the silver gene if you cross them to buff columbians.... The White Rocks have other things with them to, other than recessive white and the silver gene.

Sorry Jon.
Doug said his White Rock do not have Brassiness. Harry says his Cuckoos clean out the Brassiness. I have a choice of who to believe. Harry, Doug, Marvin or what you are telling me. I guess I will have to hatch out 50 and hope for one Silver to find out. None of my Whites from last season I hatched from Ron Patterson's White Wyandotte have brassiness. Ron bred in Doug White Rocks. So, just from my own experience I am using him.

Just an update.... High bidder was removed from my Buff auction due to lack of acknowledgement and payment to another seller. So ElitePoultry is once again High Bidder. :)
