There was a pic of Cecil that was posted in EXHIBITION MAGAZINE a while ago that shown Cecil and 2 of his males. one was White and one was Black. They looked like bookends to each other. I remember the Black looked identical to the one in your pic. Cecil surely knew how to breed that type and quality year after year. How long did you have Blacks Walt? Do you still bred them?

I had them for about 15 years. I don't have them now.

He was a fine one Walt. I know you have many birds. I think I read last year sometime you saying you hatch over 500 out. And that is alot of work. And to keep a line to the level of quality like Cecil did that is what you have to do is hatch hatch hatch....

When I had the Orps I only hatched 25-30 Orps a season. I have a lot of breeds, so I do hatch a lot, but the Orps were pretty consistent.

Last year I hatched out 20 from my pair of Buffs. I have culled only one. And it was a cockerel who, I thought, had wry tail. Still raising up the other 19. A consistant line is what I hope to have for many years. So, far so good. I bet you miss that luxury you had with your Blacks.

I do. I only hatch about that amount on other breeds too, but some of the breeds I do have to hatch 100 or so to get what I want....and even then it is a work in progress.

I know there are very few Black Orp breeders who can get away with only hatching out 30 or so like you were doing and be content with the results. Blacks, in my opinion, are still needing alot of work across the USA. One of my breeding plans for my Blacks is to breed in my Buffs into my Whites, then eventually take the better offspring from this breeding back to Whites with the hopes of crossing them into my Blacks. Where some use Blacks to better their Whites. I will be doing it the other way. Breeding White to better my Blacks. now I am talking about at least a minimum of 2 to 3 year plan. IF all goes well I can get some of the genetics that is inherit in my Buffs worked into my Whites and then eventually into my Blacks.
