Post Pics Of Orps/ Orpingtons HERE

There are many on this thread with the type of Orp I wish to one day have.

I do not have any huge plans but I would like to have some nice bbs Orps. I currently only have 4 pullets and only 2 imo are really worth breeding. I will probably use the other 2 since they are all I have and see if by luck the offspring pulls from the best of the gene pool.

I am so new at this its not even funny but I appreciate everyone on here and the wisdom you share.

Well Im releived shes OK..shes a favorite for a lot of us..scared me John.

and look at that little barred rascal...you have a gift for photography..every picture you take has so much character..

I know there are very few Black Orp breeders who can get away with only hatching out 30 or so like you were doing and be content with the results.  Blacks, in my opinion, are still needing alot of work across the USA.  One of my breeding plans for my Blacks is to breed in my Buffs into my Whites, then eventually take the better offspring from this breeding back to Whites with the hopes of crossing them into my Blacks.  Where some use Blacks to better their Whites.  I will be doing it the other way.  Breeding White to better my Blacks.  now I am talking about at least a minimum of 2 to 3 year plan.  IF all goes well I can get some of the genetics that is inherit in my Buffs worked into my Whites and then eventually into my Blacks.

This confuses me. There's enough blacks that are good enough to just breed blacks to blacks. Jody has some that are pretty darned nice. Why would you want to enter into yet another color project when you could just better or keep what's around? Not being nasty, but I really want to know. You have so many color projects going now, that this just seems like so much to deal with.

Galanie please post some pics of them. I would love to see these Blacks you are telling us about.
Actually I do not have many color projects. I have one solid pure Dun bantam pullet. One Dun Birchen pullet, a Brown Red cockerel and Lemon Blue cockerel (neither of them are going to breed to make more) and some of Harry's Cuckoos. The Cuckoo I have are equal in size with my bigger Buffs and can be taken to White to make more pure White Orps. This past year was all about increasing the number of my standard bred Orps. Just focusing on Buffs, Whites and Blacks. And will use my one Lemon Blue (he is close to 11 lbs at 9 months old) back to solid Blues to make large solid Blues. But I will only hatch out a dozen or two of the Blues.
A very good friend & mentor, who has made very few posts on this thread, he also raises EXTREME HIGH QUALITY Whites and Buffs from the eastern side of the US is puzzled why no one but a good friend Joyce Fuesting and OP of this thread has asked about getting any of my Buffs. Yes there are too many decent Blacks in the USA. However they can not beat the best Buffs in large APA shows in my area, most part have short backs, smaller in size, smaller head size, too loosely feathered, no where near the size of my biggest, or for that matter near as big as some of the best Buffs in the country. At Crossroads I seen some Buff cocks well over 16 lbs. My old Buff cock is in that size range. He has the big head gene, the long perfectly flat back that a small plane can land on. Large equal width from front to back. Thick boned, and very high fertility. All these traits I want to build into my Buffs and into my Blacks.

I took this pic in the dark and this Buff cockerel, who would not stand up in the dark. But, you folks can go back on this thread and see pics of this 9 month old when he is standing. Plenty of bird here and more to be added as he gets older.
See, I want this bird but in Black too. My mentor I mentioned uses this breeding technique to share the genetics of his best birds with his Blacks and his Whites. not only it keeps the vigor, but adds the traits I would want in my Black program.

You are right, there are good blacks. How many great SOP blacks are out there? Not many!! Some black breeders have put in the english blood and improved there blacks.

Don,
Alan, Harry, Doug, and Jack have taught me to breed my best to my best. And not to care what variety they are. Right now my best are my Buffs. Around here one has to beat Doug's Buffs. Go east and one has to beat Alan's and Bill's Buffs. Go down in your neck of the country you are butting heads with Fred's Buffs. Until i see someone breed a Black like those Buff breeders and beat them, I am joining them and listening to these guys and how they breed.

The question begs to be answered ...Why are 16 lb Rocks and Orps NOT being DQd at the shows ? I know how fond you are of the SOP. Have you read the weight section? I have a large K. I breed him, but I do not show him. I'll let his sons and daughters speak for him. They will be shown at proper SOP weights.
