Post Pics Of Orps/ Orpingtons HERE

The question begs to be answered ...Why are 16 lb Rocks and Orps NOT being DQd at the shows ? I know how fond you are of the SOP. Have you read the weight section? I have a large K. I breed him, but I do not show him. I'll let his sons and daughters speak for him. They will be shown at proper SOP weights.

At the Greenville Ohio Show last spring, I was at a table eating lunch with Doug Akers and a half dozen equally as great breeders of other breeds. A little kid came up and asked Doug how big should an Orp be?
Doug said:
"Breed them as big as you can make them"

When someone who has won as many shows as Doug gives advice I listen.

Well I guess this is why mine aren't so great! I didn't realize it was hard to find good SOP in blacks. Thanks
Don't give up so quickly you said you had 4 hens already. You can always find a very good quality rooster to buy without too much effort. One thing with animals you can always buy quality males its the females that they generally don;t part with as easily.

I don't keep many cock birds, I only have one now, he is a 2 years old I got from Fred Farthing. I don't think mine will get 16 lbs. I wish they would in one way and not on another. Them big guys could eat like a big pig. Size has alway been the number one thing. If you got them big, hopely you have enough good type to make it work.

Thanks. I have 4 males coming up now. One is looking good so far (to me) and 3 are English. Like I said before I just want some nice ones for a flock not so much interested in being a breeder but if you can't find what you want then I guess you attempt to make it.

This is Doug's mentor.
This is how Jack judges birds.
Jack told me:
"Breed for broadest head, broadest chest, broadest back and broadest tail"
The first year I took some Buffs to our Indiana State Fair poultry Show. A show that Jack was responsible for filling cages, and is one of the largest State Fair Poultry Shows in the nation. I asked Jack to critique a 1/2 Akers and 1/2 hatchery quality bred Buff. Jack while looking at the butt end of the bird, said too narrow a butt and head. Then handed the bird back to me a nd said:
"Bill if any of these traits are not broad enough I stop judging the bird"

Then he just handed me back that inferior bird.

Jack is the fella on the far right.

Ok well, not the best picture, and the bird is coming out of being broody and going into a molt. An 18 month hen that is 9 lbs. Came from Jody. Seriously? Horrible? So bad that we need to breed to other colors to improve it? I don't think so.

From the back, her tail is a nice teepee that has at least a 5 inch base. Very broad front and back. Raining and flood warnings or I'd be able to get more of her now.

Her brother, George, at 7 months. He was already 9 lbs at this age

Boom

Contented huge lap dog.. one of the sweetest tempered birds I have had the pleasure to meet... Right now That big rooster is being loved on by 4H kids..he gets the attention that he craved ..lots of hugs from kids and he soaks it all in......and because he is so tame, he was used for therapy pet for autistic children..nothing he would rather do than be petted....
