Post Pics Of Orps/ Orpingtons HERE

I love seeing all the pics of everyone's birds. I have black orps. I think they are beautiful but I would love to sell my 4 cockerels and get a roo from another line for my pullets. It seems my only option around here is shipped eggs. I don't know enough about standards. I have so much to learn. when I do go to look for pics on what an orp should look like I find lots of pics of the English but not very many good pics of the American standard. Maybe I am not looking in the right place. I am rambling...
Contact Danny Padgett his is a judge but best of all he is honest and his birds are just great. You can contact the secretary of the United Orpington CLub plus Don Chandler lives in Oklahoma and he may be able to help you also.

And Walt doesn't see the value of those petticoats ! Room for an army under there !
LOL! Back long befor the syrofoam incubator...that was the incubator..get a lot out from under that ..

In one of those old books i downloaded from cornell..they showed a NY polutry barn..they used to employ 2 boys to run fires all night long in the barn and had crude incubators used fire heat..it was those boys job to keep that fire going all night..they got fed in the morning and slept all day while the poultry keeper kept things going ..it showed woodstoves at both ends of the barnand fire heated incubators..lot easier for most small poultry people to just employ the big petty coat..

In the book the last ice age there was not even a summer at all one year, a dutch painter did a painting of villagers ice skateing in mid june..that must be how lot of those chicks survived..if you survive something like that especially when there isnt a tops grocery market..it might impact your thinking . . breeding poultry might have been, we need to keep the birds that do well in that..(long petty coat to protect from frost bite and chick survival)..

During that period of time there was no poultry in the united states other than a few egg layers and meat birds there was no APA..also a very famous book written by early settlers in northeast..can you imagine 6 ft of snow? because that was what it was like one year..one mans smart thinking saved that small group of people.dont know how he knew there was something wrong, but he did..put away barrels of hickory nuts walnuts ect ect..that winter no one could get out to hunt or anything 6 ft of snow..well below zero..he also cut enough firewood for 2 years..good thing..they needed every stick..the one thing he mentioned was he wished he had some poultry..but wasnt sure what he could spare for them to survive..

...in europe scottish highlander cattle also did very well....so when I hear these arguments SOP and british..It doesnt make very much sence to me..I get what the SOP judges want..and respect..I see and understand what they do not like and why and someday they will say to me the real reason why....as for the brit birds historically..walk a mile in somone elses shoes..things were all out survival befor eggs grew in a carton at the grocery market..they had reasons for thier selections too ..they did not select to make somone in america angry..they had other reasons......if anything I think its like respect for ones grandparents....I do think SOP judges have some very good points ..but I also see some APA birds with equal value problems such as the tiny wing that points striaght down..that always glares out at me...things I saw wrong in england was a trend to make clean legged cochin and call it an orpington..it is very different than any import that you see here..we have our fads and they have thiers..

.I have an APA judge freind who is going to england to work with the brits for alittle bit..hes going to have sit downs with some of the big breeders over there and discussions...he will be a guest of a british poultry judge...I think its a great thing,,,

My whole problem with this line of conversation is that when Vickie originally gave the weight of Monty she got jumped all over like flies on poo for breeding too big. She stated that she'll never show him. Now she's hearing that she can't show him and that big is best cause they win shows no matter how big. What is it I'm missing here?

I missed it too.  Who said she could not show him?  Who is sayin "big is best"?
Well Bill, you are. "Breed them as big as you can get them?" Because Doug Akers said so? But then when someone else has a big one, it's bad?

No, not only Doug says so. Go get yourself a subscription to Poultry Press. Keep an eye on who is winning these bigger APA shows. Don (FYI Don is President of the United Orpington Club) can confirm he seen Fred Farthing's Buff Orps at Shawnee and they WON the show. Bill has some Alan bred Buffs. Bill WINS shows. Why? Cause their perfect type, color and yes they are very large. I am still waiting for you to pull up the post that you claim says "big is best". Who said that? I am sorry you seem to be very focused on what I do. I post what works for these very well respected Orp breeders. That is the way I breed my birds. You seem to be fixated on the size of my birds and have nothing to say about the rest of the bird. Why?

 Galanie, do you show orpingtons?
After reading what I'm reading here, I'm afraid to. Are you telling me that the ones myself and Aveca posted are "bad" and in dire need of improvement? As was stated by someone else? That mine will never make it on a showroom floor? Or are you baiting me?

There is no issue with good pure Blacks and stating so has already convinced at least one person that they have bad birds, cause blacks are "in such bad shape." I would think that UOC officers would promote the breed rather than sit by while such misinformation is being taken as the Gospel.

No, there is not problem with a new line of blacks, but why re-invent the wheel? When I see something like that completely passed over and accepted by such august company as this I have to start asking questions.

As far as where did I get the idea Bill had so many color projects going on? Posts like this one: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/259995/post-pics-of-orps-orpingtons-here/7520#post_9871588 Maybe I haven't won a National or shown 400 birds but I have a bit of a brain and a pair of eyes. Tell me what's wrong with mine and Aveca's birds. Tell me why blacks are in such dire straits that they need an infusion of other colors to improve them.

"Breed them as big as you can get them" obviously doesn't ring a bell so I'm finished with that one. You don't understand that I am not the least bit fixated on the size of anyone's birds, but the fact that somehow, magically w/out ever being told, you know the size of someone else's birds and have given her hell about it.

I am willing to bet you can not pull up the post where I gave ANYONE HELL about the size of their birds.
Plus, I am still waiting for you to pull up the post that you claim says "big is best". Who said that?
Please show us the post # of these statements you claim I am saying or anyone.
