Yes do get a copy of the Standard to know things to look for. And read those first boring pages, not just the page for your breed. I managed to find an old Standard for $12 that is dated back around 1976 or something. They don't change much from year to year and the newer the better, but even an old one is better than none.

Cornell Free Library has a lot of great books and the link is here: http://www.archive.org/details/texts As stated, search Orpingtons or Orpington fowl and you'll find some good ones.

weird behavior question. I have a 5 month old black orp cockerel that will come up and grab my pants leg and then if I reach down to pet him he gets my hand. Is this the start of an aggressive rooster or just a sweet guy that wants all of my attention?

That is what I think. I posted in the behavior section and got the he is being aggressive and it will only get worse response. He has been spoiled rotten and I have yet to have an aggressive orpington but I guess there is always a first. Guess he will be getting more spoiled until my hand recovers.

Mine do it.... he is just looking for treats... I can walk among them anytime I want ... even sit down with them.. they don't do the one legged dance... cuz if they did... ummm he would be doing a solo on the other side of the coop REAL quick. I have zero tolerance for such behavior.

I think it means they are trying to boss you around like one of their hens. You'll see them doing it to their hens, the one legged dance.

My most spoiled rooster (a buff orp) was my sweetest then MEANEST rooster. He was second in command and when my black copper roo passed away he took his job WAY TOO seriously. He did have some medical issues so I will forgive him for being mean but he had no fear nor respect for me and also became very sneaky about getting you when you weren't looking. Since then I try very hard not to over baby my roos. I love them and will pick them up but I prefer them to be a little less confident around me. lol.
