Post Pics Of Orps/ Orpingtons HERE

We never received any snow this year in southeast Arkansas

Here is a show report. The Louisiana State 4-H Poultry Show was spectacular I heard. A Black Orpington hen from our line won Best Orpington and there was a lot of Orpingtons there. Two exhibitors had our line. All four recognized colors were exhibited. Buff, Black, Blue and White. There were over 50 Orpingtons shown. No word on the bantams.

What made me laugh about the coverage of this storm was the storm you talk about from long back. I kept clicking on "news" of the storm and getting pictures of people where it was snowing. Oh goodie. And it wasn't even but barely covering the ground they were walking on. But it was SNOWING! OH EXCITING! Not. "News" people are just so.. well they make me laugh sometimes.
I know..Not sure what they were thinking, Its just part of life here and actually it is much better today compared to long time ago..In the early settlements up here , one year they got 6 ft of snow..thats not a typo..6 ft and that was without drifting, so the storms of today are pretty tame..In 1978 was a biggie as you can see in the pic.. they told you to stay inside dont drive around, people did what they were asked..today they think it might be fun to go try out thier 4 wheel drive then they get stranded as the biggest 4 wheel is no match for a 6 ft heavy snow drift..

..My uncle was raising buff orps way back then in 78..He taught us when we were kids, if your going to do this...you do this right, you live in harsh weather area..make your poultry shed or barn accordingly..lots of ventelation for summer , a little heat and insulation for winter enough bodies in a well insulated barn will keep it pleanty warm. Make covered runs line with thick guage plastic so they get exercise, just remove plastic for summer...if you have few you need to add some element of a low heat..when it gets up in 30s the heat goes off..you never loose a comb .. I Miss that man..He had the best old poultry books, I bet my cousins still have those..One was an old book on new england poultry barns, wonder if I could find it on cornell free library..When we were kids we used to look at those books for hours.

Have the kids braved the snow ??? Without boots ???

They do come out for sure..We shovel paths for them around the pens so they go out and move around.. there is still snow, but its easier for them otherwise like unshoveled sidewalks..the blue orp will come out like an icebreaker..he plows right out into the pen befor you can make a path, but the others wont..the buffs prefer to have thier area cleared and all of a sudden I noticed the buffs are very big....we shovel a path from australorp to where the snow plow cleared the driveway ..the australorps waste no time, they are on that and exploring..

Bellas brother attacked me today and its really made me re think what breeds i want now. So no more Marans and after Bella, her mother and her auntie most likley.... no more Orpingtons :/

Nice day here. Yard is still soaked.
Some of the boys.
Harry's White Orp cock's first son.

Feran and girls. I will be moving out the Splash this year. Made enough last year. Not all too happy with that cross. Sometimes outcrossing lines can make for some nice birds. I am not thrilled with this combo. So, he will be down to just the 3 Black hens

He has a poopy butt, but a nice wide rear end. This is what I was hoping would be passed down to his Blue babies when crossed with the Bamma Splash.

Harold is still muddy. Well so are most birds around here.

Yosemite has replaced Barr Brady. Barr Brady was raised by someone else. He was human aggressive. Generally I will tolerate a human aggressive male IF he produces what I like. If not, the best upcoming male who I like will permanantly send the aggressive male outta job.

Another Harold boy. Nice thick bones that have been passed down from BUSTOFF (BUS was 1/2 Akers Buff orp), which is what I am trying to add into my BBS's.

My buff Orpington girls -- I took their pictures today.

I'm really hoping to get some whites and blues.

Yep..they can be meanie men...All of my orpingtons are benevolant..My australorp rooster will give me the bizzness If I make one of his girls upset..otherwise he leaves me alone..I dont mind a protective rooster..hes thinking hes doing his job..but I had a few over the top meanie roosters along the way..we had a RIR rooster once that would go straight for your face and head, boy he meant it too..you had to be dressed like a gladiator to go anywhere near him and carry a garbadge can lid for a sheild..sorry to hear you dont like Bella and auntie , they are my favorite..my blk orp hen is a bossy cow too and we nicnamed her the pants because she wears the pants in that pen..for me, thats part of her charm.
