Im not sure if i would keep the chicks or not because i need layers now because the best layers are old now and the other best layers were young and were killed last year...

You'd do well to raise up some more Buffs. My girls are incredible layers. Eight girls have been laying for months, and this includes my English Buff. I hatched and sold lots of chicks, and we still had plenty of eggs. I think Orps do better in an exclusively Orp flock. No battles here, even when I add young birds. It helps to have a good Orp roo who runs things too. Monty certainly does that.

My other hens and cockerels dont discourage fighting, they all have a gather around to see who wins! As you can see on this pic Bella challenged Ginger AGAIN and lost so her mother had to step in a get Ginger!:

That barred Roo looks like he's taking bets. You need a proper Orp roo ! Orps are not usually fighters. They are calm birds. I think your lighter, more flighty hens probably keep upsetting the peace by getting in the Orps' space. I have 4 young cockerels now who keep invading my hens' space when outside.Both the hens and my Roo won't have it, and run them off. The older girls teach every young one to be polite.

Hes a Cuckoo Maran, and Ginger used to be the old boss before i got Bellas mother and Ginger was a good boss she kept every one inline and helped hens being bullied. And Bellas mother ripped Gingers comb for no reason just walked up and did it! and ive found a pic of Bellas dad! I also believe the hen who is next to the wall eating bread is Bellas mother!:

Yeah, thats Bellas dad, they are the primrary school hens were i got the eggs!

Now that you all mentioned it, I never really see any fights between my Orps. Any fisticuffs that get started always include the other breeds. And yes, without fail, when I see the start, it's because someone invaded the Orp's space, or that other bird just went after an Orp for some reason. A couple of them really know how to end a fight, but don't actively search any out. Bella could be trying to find her proper place in the pecking order. And hasn't because Mom keeps acting like a rooster and trying to break it up, then ends up fighting the other chicken. At least that's my take.

My long time #1 hen, Big Girl, was dethroned that exact way. Now, the pecking order is somewhat strange. Anyway, my dark cornish had a few chicks and didn't like one of the hens getting too close to them. Next thing I see, that DC is all over a hen and Big Girl rushes to break it up. Ended up getting her butt kicked by the dark cornish. But the DC doesn't really want to be "head hen." She doesn't pick fights. And neither does Big Girl. So Big Girl still sort of leads, but not. It's odd to see a bird (the DC) above the lead hen that is below some of the ones below the lead hen.

I agree that she might be trying to find her place but her mother dosent split the fight up she joins in getting the hen Bella is fighting and thats what got Bella above Babs in the pecking order is because her mother joine in fighting her too and Babs is TERRIFIED of Bella mother out of all the hens Babs fears her the most!
