Post Pics Of Orps/ Orpingtons HERE

She is starting to loose quite a bit of weight now. But I am getting her chicks on Saturday so if she accepts them, she wont have to be broody anymore!:

ReniesPeeps- thank you. Since I have gotten them I am really starting to appreciate the buff color. I don't know if their eyes will change color (the color is currently a beautiful green) when they mature or not?

And yes they are very big chicks!
I think I told you that those buffs will grow on you. The eyes will be OK. I don't know why they do that. The cross of the two bloodlines is where I got that. I hope they grow out nice for you, if so you can take some to the ABA National at Knoxville in Dec. With all the shade you have they should keep good color. Back in Oklahoma I have 2 and a half acres and I only have 4 trees. That's a problem for me.

I really miss my buffs. I have been considering getting back into them. The only problem I have is space. I will have to build another coop before I can start up again.

Get some of those russian olive trees Don..throw them on the ground and they grow..the horse farms in colorado used them to shade thier horses , they grow where nothing else will..very tough tree withstands long drought or lot of rain..kind of a noxious tree but if you really need shade..it works ..12 - 20 ft tall.

Lynne,

If you're referring to Elaeagnus Angustafolia, as Russian Olive, they are a nuisance. They do not make trees here. They make a giant, mounding bush about 20' x 20' with very long toxic thorns. Great for a hedge if you want to screen. A horror to try to keep trimmed.

The tree form isconsidered a nuisance tree in theWest as ranchers are trying to eradicate it. Who needs 2" long thorns in the chicken yard?

We had some trees in our yard when I was a child (in south Texas) that mother called Olive trees, I thought she said Russian Olive but I can't be sure. They were low growing but good for shade and could indeed stand any amount of dry weather. Maybe what we had wasn't a Russian Olive. They had no thorns. As a child I thought they were interesting trees. Still do, but I haven't seen any since 1968 when we moved to Houston.
