Post Pics Of Orps/ Orpingtons HERE

Hello all new guy here. I have a question, I am in the process of building my coops runs and getting my birds. I'm in lobe with the orpington breed (looks and attitude ) due to the fact I have kids and a skidish wife. I am torn between these lovely birds and what everyone is telling I should get living in the Houston Tx area. If I can "shade them" or something it wouldn't be such an issue. I like the frozen water bottle idea and the frozen watermelon. But shouldn't I have birds that are cute as well as functional?

Help......please?

Unfortunately, Orpingtons are not tolerant of the heat. The Orp people that I know down your way have to go to some pretty extensive measures for their birds. Putting an A/C in the wall of the coop, shade, misting systems, etc. While it was in the low 90's here, my birds were suffering. I had to do the frozen treats, watering down their shade spots, etc. It really depends on how far you want to go to have the breed. Of course, you can always move to Oregon.

Bella's mother is officially a mobile broody. She does not have a set nest, her and her one egg are just moving all over the shed!

too funny! I had a similar thing with a silkie broody once- but with her she was 'nest jumping'. She didn't have her own eggs she was setting on, she kept stealing from the other hens.

Can't get much cuter than Orpingtons in my opinion- I live in South Louisiana, and I do have half shaded coops & runs. Make sure they have shade & plenty of clean water with the heat. Here is a pic of mine to give you an idea

a treat mine also like is frozen cucumbers, I cut them long ways & freeze. In all honestly my Orps seem to be as tolerant of the heat as the other breeds I have.
