Post Pics Of Orps/ Orpingtons HERE

The smaller tray in the picture is a concrete mixing tray I found at a hardware store. I was lucky with the big one. Mother had that made for her some 50 years ago to use when stripping furniture. It's rusty and I need to patch it from time to time but it's still the best thing I've found for them. Soon I'll be getting a roll of pond liner (the kind that just like a rubber sheet) and just use that in it.
i love that big tray Sarah..i was just going to ask you where you got it ,. they should sell those in poultry supply..maybe an upstart bizness to be had there..vickies feeder..that big pan..

I use a pool to help with cooling. It had a few flat stones and bricks on the bottom in case chicks need help getting out.

Broody mom adopted a large group of Orpington chicks. She is doing a great job.

I just got three 6x10 dog kennels that I want to convert into runs with some type of cool coop outside of it. At lease till I build in the 40x40 space that my wife gave me in the back of the acre. Not sure if I should jump in and buy hens or buy eggs and start from scratch.....lol "scratch"

Starting with building the coop is a great idea! Good for you!! getting prepared before you get birds. Asking questions and learning about what will work best for you, your environment, and birds is smart.

Are you looking for egg production? Meat production? Dual purpose?

Orpingtons are great birds and beautiful yard ornaments.

Dual purpose .(side note/question) will they destroy hibiscus trees?
Orps will dig around under bushes. They may munch a few low leaves . My Orps range is my orchard that has many hydrangea bushes planted under pear trees. They have done no damage. There is also an asparagus bed that is fenced with a 2' fence. Every body is happy.....Trees, bushes, asparagus , birds , and me. You can see photos on my BYC page.

That 40 x 40 ' area will make a nice place to plant different grasses in for munching during the year , if you over seed different ones. Just don't get too many birds for the area you have.
