They are all so VERY beautiful! ~ and my luck, last year, there was a lady just ahead of me at the nursery, she bought every BO they had! I've been searching & waiting to buy one for my own.

I think the German Sheps are to the dog world are what Orps are to the chicken world, A highly modified breed that changes with "IN STYLE" look of their times. Today the fluff is back with force. And the recent past years have lost alot of that look. I would just rather see the APA make them a new breed. They did it with the Aussies. Time may have come to add them as their own unique breed. Then everyone will be satisfied with the UK look and try to not modify it from what the UK judges look for.

Could I ask a maturity question or two? Are Orps ( particularly BBS Orps) ready to lay at about 20-22 weeks or so, or do they mature a little later? And at what age will they stop growing? 18 weeks or so?
Thanks- I will post pics of my girls in a day or two- esp. my three that are 16 weeks, I would like some comments on their type.

Hi Joletabey. My orps have always been slow to mature. Mine usually begin laying around 8-9 months of age; some even later than that. I'm not quite sure what you mean when you ask: "will they stop growing at 18 weeks or so?" ???

Same here. My girls started laying consistently around the 8 month mark. They are still feathering and are all over a year old. I can see the changes in them from last summer to now. Some of them "came into themselves" much faster than others but it was much later than the other breeds I have in my "eating egg" flock.

Mrs. Fluffy Puffy :

Does anyone have White Orps? The only hatchery that sales them that I know of is Murry Mucmurry Hatchery. But they are so high!

Were did the speckled orpingtons go? I want those! I supposed the originals are gone forever? Question...if the judge said not to breed to a type seen in a picture, what exactly should a person breed them to look like? Aren't those orignial renderings a description of the standard of perfection? Are we to just breed as close to what we interpret the standard of perfection to be? I am not new to chickens, but I am new to learning about the standards of perfection. I will have a new and large flock starting this year. I want to learn how to recognize what the best birds are for preserving these great breeds. But I'm more confused than ever because beauty seems to be in the eye of the beholder. We all love chickens and think they are beautiful, and each have favorite looks. Sooooo, how do I choose? Scratch head:
