Post Pics Of Orps/ Orpingtons HERE

She looks nice for her hatch date. She is considered a late hatch for Orps and may never reach her full potential size. Terry Britt told me taht the late hatch will carry the genetics and their offspring, if hatched in wmid to late winter, will reach theirs. What breeder did you get her from? That will say more about what you have than almost anything.

I've never heard that a late hatch will not reach their full potential. Can you explain this?

I can't cause it sure don't seem to pass the common sence test. Kind of like saying because you
were born late you only have part of a year to grow. but then again I am just a old time farmer.

Maybe its a showing thing ?

I'm wondering the same thing... I though April was pretty early in the hatching season, why wouldn't a bird be able to reach it's full potential within that time frame?

Then again, I've hatched as "early" has December, or would that be considered extremely late in the season?

IMO not true.. however egg laying ability, egg laying time and growth of young pullets could be slowed down just a bit do to the loss of daylight hours,
not feeding as often. however birds will still get to the supposed size.
giving supplemental light to aid in feeding helps keep them on track, which in most cases is to start getting eggs from those young birds after all the hard work & feed you put into them and start reaping the benefits of your poulty.

then we have pullet eggs, they are another thing as the chicks will generally start off a bit smaller but they ultimately will attain there size,
from my experience with them.

Good to know!

I didn't think buff orps would be as big as she is at this age, so I'm pretty sure she is going to be okay

She probably weighs around 8 pounds.. Maybe less. I'm not a good judge on weight though.. And scales are forbidden at my house

IMO a late hatch for orps would be like Aug Sept Oct when they start getting cold before they are full grown which makes their body focus more on keeping warm then on growing so they wont grow as big where as if you hatch early in the season and its warm when theyre put out side then they will be able to focus more on growing.
