I can officially join this thread after last weekend's Crossroads show! While wandering around the sales floor in our hopeless search for just one or two pullets (ok, not really hopeless as we would have come home with only two pullets had we been stronger but it was a lot more challenging to find a single pullet than a pair or trio for sale) we found a pen with blue orp pullets in it. After an hour or two of searching, we were finally able to track down the owner/seller. I was so happy that my husband was just as smitten with them as I was. Before we decided for sure what we wanted to do, we kept wandering back to that pen with the blue orps. They were just calling to us!
Anyway, here's my new girl:
Not the best picture as they still haven't settled in. Shortly after my husband shot this picture, she managed to escape (along with the Ameraucana cockerel we brought home). She's settling in nicely and has risen to the top of the pecking order in our new trio. I was a little surprised because she seems like such a mellow bird that I was sure the other two would dominate her, but apparently she's not as much of a push over as I thought. Though she does quickly defer to our cockerel if he stands up to her. I'm hoping she can become head hen when we introduce them to the rest of the flock as she seems to be a fairly benevolent leader (lots of stinkeye, but not much actual contact pecking when I was sitting with them and watching them the other day). She's also the least skittish of the new birds, and after I spent an hour or so sitting with them yesterday afternoon she doesn't retreat into the sheltered part of their tractor anymore when I go out to check on them/feed/water them.
