Post Pics Of Orps/ Orpingtons HERE

Went out to my #1 Black pen and all 5 hens had laid an egg today. And seen Feran taking care of business this morning. So i should get a good idea how many he has done his job with as of today.

And I finally moved in Harold into the Blue pen to end this streak of unfertile eggs. I KNOW Harold will not let that continue.
And yes that is my one Black Rumpless in with him. She is a tank for a pullet

Can you please critique our cockerel? Be brutally honest. He is one of 6 chickens my crazy son decided to enter in a show next week. I think he is very nice, but he is our only Orp. Hatched from shipped eggs, none of the others made it. We've never shown before, so I'm trying to see what to expect. He's 6 mos old, btw. I don't know much about Orps, but I love him and have more on the way!

I will do my best to point out the good and the needed to be improved on. He has a nice dark eye which is good. Comb appears to have 5 points which is good. For now he has a medium size wattles. That is good. Too young to tell on how his tail will fill out. It maybe the way he poses but the tail angle is a bit too low. He could use some more width in front and back. Some would say he is a bit too leggy. I have a friend who's mentor says he does not mind a bit of sunlite under the bird. Really hard to tell at this age with Orps since many will continue to fill out till they hit a year and a half old.
I am being very brutally honest in what I see. Many here would only give the good, but I feel to be honest may save you money IF you had planned on putting him in a breeding program. When you go to the show make sure to ask the judge his opinnion after the show is over what he likes and doesn't like. APA judges are very honest as well. And you may get a different critique.
Either way enjoy the show as a good experience and learn from other breeders who will be there and don't fear asking them as well
HAVE FUN!!!!

The first picture he was standing up very tall, much more so than usual if that makes a difference. The 2nd pic isn't great, but it's more what he normally looks like when standing comfortably. He's a sweet boy! I was hoping to use him in breeding, but definitely, if the batch of chicks I'm getting later this month ends up to have a better roo, I will cull Tiny here. He's a sweet boy, though. Thanks for your thoughts! I appreciate it it! And you were not harsh at all! You were very kind. ;) He had barely any tail a month ago, so I am hoping that will continue to fill out as well. He really is quite young. Barely 6 months old this week. The rest of my cockerels (different breeds) looked like full grown, though slightly thin versions of a good rooster of their breeds by 5 mos, but Tiny here still looked like a hen with a few hackle feathers until recently. lol

Yes be open to using another IF that one fill out more. The term that applies when breeding is "TYPE". You can correct most everything else over time. But it is very hard to build size quickly when breeding. Go to some APA shows. Find breeders of Blacks and ask them if they have any culls that look better. I bought a $20 Buff Orp cock last year from one of the best Orp breeders in the country and he has already given me better Buffs then I had before. You can get away with hatchery quality hens if yoy have an exceptional quality male in a breeding program. Do not be afraid to ask around.

Great info for newbie like myself. Anyone care to give opinions, good or bad, about roo i posted earlier?

Your new male is of hatchery origin. Though he is nice yard art, he does not meet the Standard for an Orpington. However, for crossing to Leghorns, you should fine. I would search for the Buff Leghorn thread and another thread on "Breeding Buff". Both will help you greatly.

We also have a similiar male. We use him for a comparision of the Standard type and hatchery type. Most on this thread have either the American Standard type or the Imported English type Orpingtons. However, all type Orpingtons are supposed to be welcome. Good luck with your breeding program!

Heres pics of a roo i picked up yesterday so i can cross with my white leghorns. Im new to this so tell me what ya think about him. Good, bad, ugly?

Been hacked and forced to contact NIFTY thru his website. Unfortunately there is a couple here who has no life and feels threatened by EXHIBITION breeders. I guess their not selling their hatchery quality birds well enough and this is what they do. So, my IP has been blocked. IF this happens to you just go to NIFTY's site and write him direct. Then you will be able to have a voice

Pretty sad isn't it. For anyone who likes to know who it is just write me to my email direct. and I will let you know who these folks are..
