I will do my best to point out the good and the needed to be improved on. He has a nice dark eye which is good. Comb appears to have 5 points which is good. For now he has a medium size wattles. That is good. Too young to tell on how his tail will fill out. It maybe the way he poses but the tail angle is a bit too low. He could use some more width in front and back. Some would say he is a bit too leggy. I have a friend who's mentor says he does not mind a bit of sunlite under the bird. Really hard to tell at this age with Orps since many will continue to fill out till they hit a year and a half old.
I am being very brutally honest in what I see. Many here would only give the good, but I feel to be honest may save you money IF you had planned on putting him in a breeding program. When you go to the show make sure to ask the judge his opinnion after the show is over what he likes and doesn't like. APA judges are very honest as well. And you may get a different critique.
Either way enjoy the show as a good experience and learn from other breeders who will be there and don't fear asking them as well

My son won Best Jr LF!!! We got a lot of compliments on how big the cockerel was for his age. I think those pics I posted earlier in this thread really don't do him justice. He's a really big boy. There were a few Black Orp roosters in the main show, and he was as big as those, just not quite as filled out, especially in the tail, and in the chest. He was just as wide, though, and not any leggier than them. I think he is just not photogenic. Thanks for your thoughts on him, and I really hope he continues to fill out. He's a big boy for 6 mos old. That's him in the background, I have no idea how the angle I took it with made him look so small. LOL. We had trouble fitting him in and out of the cage doors. His tail angle does look a little low most of the time now that I'm looking at it. But he's a very relaxed boy, and when he is strutting around the yard with the girls, he holds it up higher. I'm not sure what to think of that. He's just lazy maybe?

I love reading this thread - I am ordering a bunch of different breeds to try them out, but so far my orps are my fav. and I would love to get into breeding and showing them next year. There is a breeder of lavender orps who lives near me, I'm trying to line up getting a few hens and a roo for July, and I hope I can get some photos and get your opinions on which would be the best stock.

I really wasn't interested in Orps. I got just 4 bbs Orp hatching eggs as freebies along with some Penedesenca eggs last fall, Tiny is the only one that hatched and made it. My son adored him, and I am really liking Orps now, too, now that I see how calm and friendly they are. There's just something really endearing about a gigantic rooster with a huge fluffy butt who is just sweet as can be! He's really sweet to the girls, too. He's been very into finding nesting spots for them lately, and it's hilarious to see him trying to squeeze himself into some really small spaces and trying to call the girls over to tell them to lay their eggs there. I wish he'd show them the nesting boxes.

I am supposed to be picking up some bbs Orp chicks at the Carolina chickenstock in 2 weeks, so I am excited to be getting more!

Haha the two roosters I've had seemed to want them to lay anywhere but the nest boxes.

You use him for now but always keep an eye out to improve your stock. One problem I see many who show is they fall in love with their birds and it can make it hard to want to use another bird for breeding. IF your just wanting to have them as pets then use him. It is always a good idea to have at least 2 or 3 back up cocks just incase.
Keep enjoying the shows. It is alot of fun, especially when you or your son does well.

We did have fun! I think I will enter some birds myself at the next show. I'm not attached to Tiny like my son is. If I get a better roo, I will def use him for breeding, but Tiny may have to stick around as my son's pet. He's his buddy.

Mamma keep on going to shows. You can learn much from the seasoned vet breeders. They will help you out. Most all at these shows are good people to new comers to the hobby. Gain someone as a mentor and feel free to ask them everything.
Here today I went out to take a few pics of my Blacks. I have a new mentor who is one of the very best Orp breeders in the USA. We've been trading emails. I have been asking him for an honest critique of what I have and what I need to work on. I know my birds do not hold a candle to his. But, you have to start somewhere.
This is Feran as of today. Yesterday was another day where I got 5 eggs from the 5 hens in with him. The one Splash was at the Gateway Show, and I gave the egg to a very nice lady from Illinois. Trying to expand the interest in our Orps. hope she likes what pops out.



Here is Barr Brady. my #2 Black cock. He needs more size, but has a nicer tail just the feathers are longer then I like. Both LahFawnDuh (Russ Milkey bred hen) and her daughter are in with him.




The closest hen is from the BUSTOFF line of Blacks. She is the very best he threw. It is very hard to get a good tail. And when ever I get one, I most definitely will use them in my breeding program. And this girl is one of 3 hens from the BUS I kept. And the only one I am using in my Black program. the goal with her is to stiffen and shorten the tails on my Blacks.

I love the pics of your flock. Absolutely awesome. The only black chicken I have that has a perfect tail is unfortunately a Black Sex Link but she didn't develop that untill she was 3 years old.
