Post Pics Of Orps/ Orpingtons HERE

Here are photos of White Orpingtons from McMurray Hatchery are friend of mine bought last year as chicks.

An APA judge told them some were closer to a Leghorn than an Orpington.

Hi Everyone, I recently ordered and received The Orpington Fowl books (Dr. Burdett and Dr Batty). I will share part of an email during my correspondence with Dr Batty just in case any of you are willing and interested. If you were to submit photos to me, I'll put them all in a CD, then send them to Dr. Batty for his consideration in the next edition of the book. Proceeds benefit The Poultry Welfare Trust (UK). So...go and dig up some photos so that we can have our Orps represented.

Quote from our email correspondence:

Would value photos of your birds (and those of your friend) for inclusion in our books. The USA birds tend to be more true to the Standards than do the British !
With All Good Wishes
JIM

Please consider sharing your beautiful Orps!!

Your going to give one of my chicken a big head. She is already photobombing my other chicken's picture!!!

This is suppose to be a picture of my blue(in the background) but my splash jumped in front of her for the shot.

There is my next attempt to get a shot of my blue. Do you see the extra leg behind my splash's butt? That is the blue I was trying to take a picture of before she walked into my shot.

I shoved my splash aside out of camera range but was not quick enough to get the shot.....

And I almost got a decent shot if not for a head that came into the view of my camera!!!

And I think she was getting worse about jumping in front of the camera!!!

I could just see this happening! Tell them you are photographing the Splash, then Blue will be interested.

That chicklet is gonna be a star!!!

I was at Archive.org browsing stuff and ran across the Poultry Fancier magazine. In vol. 12 I ran across this girl. Just look at those lines! That's what I love, and yet this was 100 years ago.

AVECA: Thank you for the book ID. I've got Cook's Orp book as well as his Making Poultry Pay. Great info in those old books, I'll tell ya! And free! Right in my price range lol.

That's the underline an Orp should have! No scooped out area in front of her legs below the point of breast.

Neat photo even with the shadow underneath. Thanks for sharing. She does have a very nice frontal on her though we should remember we are seeing her as a mature hen and not a five month old pullet. This photo is also real interesting in terms of what some of the black Orps were looking like by the 1920s and 30s. Real easy to imagine going from this hen to what we think of as the modern UK type. That type is not so newly created by exhibitor interests as some might have us think. Again, thanks for the photo. This old stuff is often tons of fun and interest.

The English Os have this deep keel at a very young age, and they keep it.The US Os develop it later, if they're going to have it. See my page for photos of my English Os. The pullet on my avatar was 12 weeks old in the photo. She just keeps on getting bigger and rounder.I think she'll end up looking much like the old Clevenger Orps, as she so far, does not have as much underbody fluff as some English Os. Heaven knows she doesn't need it here in SC with this heat wave!
