All I know is fluffy, but I am not a show person. Halls Family Farm does I believe, you'll find him a few pages back.

The feathers on an Orp should be broad and smooth fitting....not "fluffy"..........although you will see fluffy Orps on BYC. Also be aware that there is a APA Standard type and a British type. Only the APA type meets teh APA Standard.......as a rule. There are two threads here on Orps.

All mine are broad and smooth fitting, just not as round in the body as the english birds. I have 1 pretty little pullet that looks like she's wearing a skirt compared to the others. Not sure I completley understand the difference, can't you have both broad, smooth fitting, and fluffy together?

Heres som eolder pics of a few of mine. I chose the breed for the genetic disposition and all-around functionality (meat/eggs). I don't intend to show, yet I did invest in some Lemon Cuckoo's so that I can sell the chicks to help pay for my feed. I love my Cuckoo roo, he is going to be masive and is very 'lemony' in his stripes. I also have two promising looking Buff roos. I am going with size, disposition, and feather beauty together.

Post a photo of your Black Orpington here. Who did you get him from?

There are two breed clubs for Orpingtons. The American Orpington Poultry Fanciers is an internet breed club with free membership. It now has over 155 members. Most hang here on BYC.

Walt has been pointing out the differences between the SOP American type and the Imported type Orpingtons. This thread has postings of both, so it is understandable why you are confused.

Visit a poultry show and ask a judge to show you what the Standard requires. Many breeders have their own idea of what an Orpington should look like. Its not what I want or what you want, its what the Standard says. You can raise whatever you want in your own backyard. But when you get to a showroom, its what the Standard says that counts.

Here are some of our Black Orpingtons. Type should be the same in all varieties, color being the only difference.

If I can get things together I might be able to meet Walt this week! I'd like to actually see what he's talking about. That will help in my slecting hens to breed for my lemon cuckoos.

The United Orpington Club has a lot of information on Orpington's, plus a membership that is amazingly knowledgable about the breed as well. It is the foremost recognized and respected Orpington Club in the country. Here's a link to the website, http://www.unitedorpingtonclub.com

Congrats ashandvine! I'm thinking of adding a large and/or bantam black orp hen to my chocolate bantam pen next year - maybe a US APA type. Almost finished another large coop.
