ok has anyone other than me bought any yokohamas from ideal? i have a pair and the roo is not living up to ideals stated discription! they say the tails are to grow to the legnth in the picture or look like the picture but the one i have is way below that! he will be a yr this min may and i have spoken with other long tail breeders and they all tell me that he is dried up and will not grow any more! has anyone else had this problem?
yea i kno, i just thought that since their discription of the longtail fowl they sell says that their stock will look like what is pictured and nothing more that they would live up to that.... the roo that i have dosent come close! That is to be expected with hatchery birds (nothing against them; it just is what it is). I've never had Yokohamas, but I did have Phoenix from Ideal years ago. Their tails had a few long feathers that dangled past the rest of the tail, but they never grew long like in the breed standard--just longer than a normal rooster. Cheap hatcheries like Ideal are a great way to get a bunch of breeds for either pets/utility or to figure out what breeds you like. My suggestion would be to get some Yokohamas from breeders if you want quality/true long tails.
I've always found that as a general rule, the more unusual the breed, the lower quality it is from a hatchery. It makes sense when you think of supply/demand versus breeding for very specific traits.
buff orpington or rir i would guess but i don't know for sure
