Post Pics of your Leghorns

That really does suck. I am assuming the guy who sold you them said nothing about his flock containing SC's?
Yeah if you do breed that SC to a RC hen you will get mixed babies of ST and RC, is that a big problem? If he has good type.

How come I thought you had a whole heap of them lol? If you just have those 3 first years then that's not a big loss. But if it was me I'd never give up on RC LH's but that's only because we either don't have them here or they are rare.

Sorry to disappoint but if you are expecting me to asses your birds I really don't have much of an idea hahaha. I'm only new to working properly with LH's and I don't know your SOP.

I have only 3 cockerels, but I have 4 pullets. I also have 2 white RC pullets.

It is VERY difficult to get RC Leghorns.

They do have them at maybe a couple hatcheries, but there are not many breeders that work on them.

I had wanted this year to be my "marathon hatching of wonderful breeder eggs, so that I could then decide which breeds I would focus on and breed into stupendousness"

Well, sheesh.

I picked:

RC Brown Leghorn (the RC whites were thrown in as extras)
Dominiques
Golden Penciled Hamburgs

Bantam Wheaten Ameraucana
Bantam Blue laced Red Wyandotte

Truly, 5 breeds is more than I can do justice to. However, I was hoping that I would fall in love with some, and hate others, and reduce the number that way.

Of my RC Leghorns, the whites got 'red in the face' (so reached point of lay) MUCH earlier than the dark browns. This makes me worry that maybe the Dark Browns will be a flop in egg laying. And, I didn't end up with a single male white Leghorn. I had 3 RC White Leghorn, but I ate one because she got some odd sour crop/ impacted crop thing.

So far the personalities of the Dominiques are the best for us. However, the ones from Cackle are closer to SOP than the ones I got from a breeder. Sad, huh? I have a good number of them, 6 male and a bunch of girls, so more to choose from. However, I am disappointed in them too.

The Hamburgs that I got from Cackle are actually very good. I think they look quite nice, even though I am down to 1 male and 2 female, I think all three look very good.

Also, the bantams all look good so far. All of my bantams are from breeders.

hahah I wish I could do a "marathon hatching of wonderful breeder eggs, so that I could then decide which breeds I would focus on and breed into stupendousness" . You must have a lot of room, lucky!

You have some real nice breeds there but I have been told by breeders that the less you do the more you can improve a breed. Even top breeders tend to stick to no more than 3 or 4.

Especially here in Australia most White strains are better than any others but the Browns aren't far behind so unless you have a particularly bad strain or it's very different in the US I wouldn't be to worried about the Browns. How many eggs are you getting from them now?

Actually, I don't think any of the dark brown leghorns are laying yet! None have pinked up in the face.

My Dominiques, the exact same age, are all at the point of lay, and I have gotten a few eggs from them.

I think those two White RC Leghorns might be laying, and I just thought my d'uccles had increased laying.

I will stare closely into the egg basket today.

And yes, I agree.....I should really only pick one, or maybe two breeds to actually breed. That is why I was hoping I would end up hating some of the breeds I got. :D

I just an assortment pack from MPC two weeks ago and I have one I believe is an Exchequer Leghorn. She's my favorite chicken. She was the first to fly and the first trust me. I can carry her around on my shoulder and if I open the cage she runs out to see me.
