What do you guys think of my white leghorn cockerel

Since this seem to be the Leghorn place to go....i read on another thread on BYC that Leghorns have White cheeks and some other breed have Yellow cheeks but their not true Leghorns, they went on to state that White Leghorns have White cheeks only. Is this true, because i got Leghorns from MSU and they have Iridescent Blue cheeks. i have tried looking at them from all different angles and they are blue, even if i stand back and look they look iridescent blue. Is this a specific variety of Leghorn? We asked the guy at MSU but he rattled off some number of the variety they are like MS1656 something so that wasnt really helpful.

what's msu?. Leghorn have white ears.! Most likely yours are not pure that's why they gave you a number of their strain. They might have high level of leghorn but not pure.Do you have pics?

yeah... I really don;t think that there is any blue on the faces of my leghorns.... but now I want to go take a close look...


@misfitmorgan and on your leghorns the blue is right under the eyes? but not on the big fleshy ear, that is supposed to be white?

Like, some of mine don't have a solid white ear, they have a bit of red in the white. But I don't think that there is any blue in the white...

again, I need to go look.

MSU is Michigan State University

We were specifically told they were White Leghorns...i kinda would like to think the PhD's at MSU would know what kind of birds they have but they do have something like 300,000. i dont have a picture atm...i will get some when i get home later if there is any daylight left.

On a side note.... We got 20 chickens....the first 24hrs after bringing them home they laid 26 eggs

i'm still trying to figure out how that worked out.

wich hens?, those leghorns? Eggs are form in a 26 hr period but yours might be those that lay less than that so probably every 24 hrs. You have a gold mine there.!

That is what we are hoping though from the move 6 days ago they are now down to 3 eggs a day...They are all settled in, with lots of laying mash and water and the weather is nice and warm so we are hoping they will pick back up. Meanwhile...they were part of a study on fertility aka if chickens lay more when exposed to roosters, so the first 40 or so eggs we got were all pure fertilized leghorns so they are in the incubator to see if we can get a rooster and of course more hens lol.

They're probably stress for the change of place, but they will get back on their laying. Do you know their age? With all those eggs I'm sure you will get some males. I'm so happy with my leghorns, I'm you will be with yyours too.!
