post thoughts about sillkies

We picked up Mae West at a poultry show outside of Nashville. She is a hoot and very much the diva, boss lady. She bosses around all of the big girls. She is very sweet and we love her. I will always have a silkie.

Here is Mae:

We have six Silkies and we absolutely love them. They are quiet and gentle and you can cuddle them! They're beautiful and easy to look after. My 5 year old son loves them. They're not jumpy and flighty and they're so fun to sit and watch. I have one buff, one grey, one blue, one splash and two white. We plan to get more next spring. I was surprised at how regularly my hens did lay, and their eggs aren't very tiny either. They like to curl up together and love to share their nest boxes. I will always have Silkies!

OK will sillkies hatch another hens eggs if I put them in a broodys
nesting box? If they find out that the eggs were not theirs will
they hurt the chicks??? If so they might can be my broody tool.
HA! HA! o'ya how often R they broody and in what seasons?
Don't forget to tell me which kind is the cutest.
Let me know, Larra;)

They will go broody anytime of the year. 1 of mine just hatched out a chick in the cold ky weather. This makes the 3rd time this girl has went broody since june. They love hatching chicks and being mommys. They will about hatch anything that is an egg..LOL They are good mothers too.

I want some of those so bad. Going to a show this weekend and I can almost guarantee I'll have some if they have them for sell.

Sitting in my yard the other day and my 3 month old roo jumped up into my lap and just sat there with me. I was so flattered! They make the most sweet sounds and talk to each other all day long. Their sweat trilling is music to my ears. I cannot wait for my first eggs come spring and hopefully some little chicks. They are comical to look at in their growing stages and when they run everyone laughs. A really nice & gentle bird for children as well. My experience has been nothing but positive.
Here are some 2 month old chicks.

I am thinking about getting a silkie but im worried she might get bullied. I have Orpingtons, Leghorns, and Easter Eggers. Do you think it would be better to get two rather than one silkie?

Silkies can definitely be bullied. I'd recommend adding 2 very slowly to your established group and keep them under a watchful eye .Incorporating them a little at a time is best so you can babysit any problems. Allowing them a LOT of space and hiding paces is also important. Remember that they don't see well because of their fluff so often don't see trouble approaching them until it is too late to escape.
In my experience a mixed group that grows up together from peeps is so much easier.
