The name Araucana was used prior to the mid 1970's for a bunch of birds that laid blue eggs and had origins in South America from imports earlier in the century. But there were no standards and by then they were all mutts. One group of people focused on improving the rumpless tufted aspect to get birds that would breed true, the other the tailed, muffed and bearded, what we would call an EE now.

The rumpless tufted breed was accepted by the APA first and they chose to keep the name Araucana for them. That left the other group to come up with a name when the APA accepted their breed and they decided on Ameraucana. Obviously it is a bit more detailed than that but I believe I have the gist of it correct from one of the original Ameraucana breeders who is active on the Ameraucana BYC thread.

Then, of course, the big hatcheries screwed it all up calling birds that have the general appearance of an Ameraucana but not the repeatable coloring, etc Ameraucana and/or Araucana even though they do not meet the APA standards. And they came up with Americana which is not a breed recognized by the APA either. I don't know why it is so hard for most of them to call the birrds Easter Eggers. They have no problem with "Red Star", "Golden Comet" etc for sexlinks which are not APA recognized breeds either.

It sounds like you had a good introduction between the chicks and hens.  During this time did you ever seen the chicks dive for cover into the tunnel/shelter?

Occasionally but mostly they just ducked and ran. I dont put them together until the chicks are big enough to fly and run. I think the most important thing i added was the chamfered corners. When i raised my own bantams the biggest danger to the chicks was being cornered by an aggressive hen and held in place with her wings and pecked on the head til the skull caves in. I lost 2 that way.

The tunnels allowed them to run around and yet have a safe place to sleep and eat. They had their own feed and water inside the brood pens. The hens can scare them so much that they stay out of the way and never get to eat. My bantam brood mom was like that. She could cling to the smallest outcrop and would wait till the hens went out to the run and hop down to eat and drink.

Thanks for the info!! Very interesting. Being new to this it is pretty amazing how many breeds or sort of but not exactly breeds that there are. My mother in law was amazed to find out that all chickens aren't white. :D

I dont care what they call them as long as they lay colored eggs. Unfortunately the only chipmunk that actually looks like an auracana wont be laying any eggs because he thinks hes Don Juan. He doesnt know it yet but he may become dinner. He is just too rambuctious and too loud. He doesnt have spurs yet so im tempted to keep him but if he grows spurs he will be toast.

Added some windows with hardware cloth over the cut outs. Still have to add the trim around the right door window but I ran out of daylight. Also added my nest box to the side of the coop and my automatic water.
