It sounds like you had a good introduction between the chicks and hens. During this time did you ever seen the chicks dive for cover into the tunnel/shelter?

The name Araucana was used prior to the mid 1970's for a bunch of birds that laid blue eggs and had origins in South America from imports earlier in the century. But there were no standards and by then they were all mutts. One group of people focused on improving the rumpless tufted aspect to get birds that would breed true, the other the tailed, muffed and bearded, what we would call an EE now.
The rumpless tufted breed was accepted by the APA first and they chose to keep the name Araucana for them. That left the other group to come up with a name when the APA accepted their breed and they decided on Ameraucana. Obviously it is a bit more detailed than that but I believe I have the gist of it correct from one of the original Ameraucana breeders who is active on the Ameraucana BYC thread.
Then, of course, the big hatcheries screwed it all up calling birds that have the general appearance of an Ameraucana but not the repeatable coloring, etc Ameraucana and/or Araucana even though they do not meet the APA standards. And they came up with Americana which is not a breed recognized by the APA either. I don't know why it is so hard for most of them to call the birrds Easter Eggers. They have no problem with "Red Star", "Golden Comet" etc for sexlinks which are not APA recognized breeds either.
