post your chicken coop pictures here!

Thank you! Well, there are 2 vents already & 2 windows...do I need more? & the nesting boxes do have lips, the man doors will also, & the chicken's door. We just mounted the boxes, one on either side, with plenty of room left over for more boxes. Hubby owns an industrial wood packaging company, so I get free pine shavings, all I want. It really came in handy with the horses! They used a TON more than chickens. He's going to build a storage loft too. I'm looking for some kind of plastic inserts for the nesting boxes for easier cleanup. Litter boxes, disposable foil cookwear...any ideas? Gotta be 14" x 15" to fit. Can't wait to do their outside area, lotsa entertaining things for them to do. Swings, etc. is there a special kind of sand for their sand box?

Hey Mike, I know you want to/have to put some sort of screening over the open vent areas, but just so you know, I have 1/2" hardware cloth over my open areas, and the amount of dust these birds produce is amazing! I have to spray the HWC with the garden hose on jet to clear the dust off it about twice a year. Just thought you might want to know that so you can plan accordingly. Maybe removable screens so they can be cleaned? I don't really know... Something I will be keeping in mind for my next build as well. It's looking like a chicken mahal!

It is too late for that I need to move on and get this hen house done ASAP. If it becomes a problem I will have to address it later. I am going to build the frame for the front man door next. I have to frame in a chicken door to the rear put all the windows in and then side it. It seems like everything has taken so long to do I am looking forward to it being done.

I think you need one too. It's bigger than the pics make it look, I could easily keep a horse in it, comfortably. Hey, my pasture is still fenced...and BoBo (black austrolorpe) used to ride Jess (Morgan horse). I have pics, I swear. Sadly, they have left this earth. Sob. What is a restructured shed? This guy went above & beyond on the materials too.

I got the front man door installed today it was a barn find in my barn when I moved in 4 years ago. I had to build a door jam for it and I had never done that before I have hung quite a few pre-hung doors but I had never started from scratch with just a door. I had dreaded doing it and it went pretty good I am happy with the outcome. I made the door swing out so they can't kick chips in front of the door and block it closed. The door had a little design molding just under the window and my wife wanted it to show so I had to very carefully pry it off without breaking it, I can't believe I got it off without breaking it. I also had to do a little work on the door the hinge screws were stripped so I machined the hinges and countersunk the holes a little deeper so I could use larger diameter screws. Here are a couple pictures of the door I love it and think it was worth the effort.

You might also notice I raised the collar tie so it does not block the door view in earlier pictures you will see it down on top of the beams on the outside corners I actually moved it 3 times but I like it now LOL.

I can't see the vents at all in the pics, so not sure if they would be big enough if they are so small you can't see them? A building that size should have some good venting up at the peak of the roof and under the eaves. The lips on the boxes in the pic are not deep enough, so unless you've added a deeper lip on them since that pic, you are going to have some difficulty keeping nesting materials and the eggs in the boxes.

To add to that Mountain lions can drag 250 pounds up and over that six foot fence....

Thats why having a good stout enclosure is a must.

I personally have seen a Percheron gelding stand with his lip on the wire twitching with every zap.... He kind of liked it.

I have boarded at a big stables with hotwire a strand around the pastures at the top and lower to keep the horses from chewing on the fence. Half mile track around the outside and one acre divisions on the inside. The wire was roebust at least sixteen gauge and the charger was stout. I leaned over to pet my horse and it zapped me and subsequentially the horse on the nose. So if you are running miles of fencing you may need one big charger or maybe even two.

The bipolar fencing I want to use is intregal within a tape. a bit more expensive to run because the insulators are different

But nothihg is going to contain an animal that has learned to defeat the wire.

fortunately here the weeds are a small concern.... and my mare respects hot wire.

My mom has told me a story of one time when this one brood mare she had way back in the day was about to be breed and the stallion got her right up next to the fence. After that Mom said that she's always looked a little disappointed in the session afterwords.
