I have another update on the coop and run build. I got the hen house roof installed the ridge is a continuous vent with 1/8" gutter screen blocking the bug access the sofits on the top roof are also open with the 1/8" screen.

Dang Gundawg, sure is too bad you don't take any pride in doing a job well

Given you have now told us what you do for a living, I am not surprised in the least that you have an eye for detail and precision. I bet "quick and dirty" would be emotionally impossible for you.

Haha! I'm willing to share...anyway, I think it'll work. Picture half a pizza box inside these nesting boxes, they fit perfectly, are inexpensive, replaceable & EASY!! I can simply put the bedding in it, hope the 2.5" lips will be enough. If not, my bad, I'll deal with it. Still easier than horse messes. I
have lupus & RA, so after 60, I'm lookin for easy peasy.

I would add a 3"-4" board across the front of the boxes. Lots of chickens like to make a "bowl" in the material and that would result in a lot of it ending up outside the boxes as they sit now. You can still put pizza boxes in the bottom.

... but ... how are you going to keep the chickens from eating the pizza box? I bet if it has ANY oil or pizza residue on it, they will dive right in.

I have not found that cleaning nest boxes is a chore at all. In fact I very rarely do it. If the hens aren't sleeping in the boxes (and if their roosts are higher than the nest boxes most won't) the nest material doesn't get very dirty. Mine have at least 4" of shavings. When I do clean them I just toss the shavings on the floor (I use the same compress pine shavings for both) and put new shaving in the nest boxes.

My coop so far, still a lot of work to be done but it's starting to look respectable from the front.
Does the white trim of the hen house door look wrong? Should that be stained like the wood?

Ask the chicks for their opinion. If they don't complain, the white is acceptable to them.

Silly, I'm not going to get used pizza boxes, new clean ones. I'm looking for easy ways to keep things clean, I have lupus & RA. Hubby owns an industrial wood packaging company, so I get as much free bedding as I want. I'll make it lots deeper in winter here in NE Ohio.

Hubby just installed a naturally treated skirt to deter predators, now all I need is the run put up & some chickens. I talked to the 4-H poultry leader in Portage County last night, I'll contact Annette at Happy Trails...I prefer used pets.
