post your chicken coop pictures here!

I love the descriptions of the Amercaunas. I have two and they are just that way. They stick together and the yard is big enough to get away from the others. They like to coop together at night separate from the others which I am letting them do bec they are molting and more skittish than ever. One is better than the other. One is so bad that I nicknamed her Squeeker. If I pick her up you would think I scalded her. They are so interesting and lay beautiful blue eggs everyday (except while molting), but I don't think I'd get more bec they are so freaky.

We love our APA Blue Wheaten Ameraucana (my avatar) so much. We decided to order an APA Blue Ameraucana (not Easter Egger) along with a rare Blue Breda for Spring 2015 - both should be non-combative to add to our existing gentle-tempered flock. Our Blue Wheaten Ameraucana is growing new feathers after a pretty explosive moult in which she was lethargic, reclusive, skittish, with no appetite. The moulting time is quite stressul to chickens and the incoming new quills are irritating so obviously they freak if you touch them. So, yes, during moult birds are more sensitive and skittish but our girl is getting back to her normal kooky self again, letting us pet her, feed her by hand, etc, TG! I don't mind the "freaky" in Ameraucanas or EEs because their hyper-activity doesn't cause them to fly out of the yard which they easily could if they wanted - yet the hyper personality keeps them alert and predator-savvy. Once we hold our Ameraucana, she melts in our arms, carries on a cooing conversation back and forth with us, and eventually goes to sleep limp as a dish-rag. One of the sweetest gentlest breeds we've ever had the pleasure of owning.

Hi Kyle, The reason is that chickens will roost in the highest space available. If your nests are too high, they will sleep in them and dirty them where you'll be cleaning them out constantly.

We bought our little coop already custom-built by a customer at our local feed store. I like the design but he used cheap OSB material and placed the small 2x2 roost pole at the same level as the nestbox ledge on the opposite side. "Hmmm..." said our chickens, "...should we sleep in the nice roomy straw-lined nestboxes for the night or the skinny pole at the same level across the coop?" Guess which decision my girls made - we have to clean out the straw in the nestboxes every day. Our next coop won't have that same mistake! I'm thinking our girls have used the nestboxes for 3 years that they'll never get accustomed to a high roost pole in the next coop. We'll see.

Good-sized people doors on both the coop and the pen. I likey!

Thank you I likey too. Makes my life easier. I also have out up a 2 ft. Fence around the outside perimeter to keep my dogs at a distance so they can't run in. The chickens are bigger than them but they are little heathens! Lol

Here's my coop! I could use some advice; I live in northern VT, it gets cold here. For sure negative teens, occasionally as low as -35ish. Should I insulate this thing? 6 hens in there, deep litter. The coop is tight but single walled. I could run an extension cord for a lamp but I don't want to. My coop is about 7'x8' and 8' tall. If I did insulate, any reccomendations for cheap insulation?

Thanks!
