Here's ours: a 48 sq. ft. coop sided in locally milled sugar pine. It has a skylight for daylighting the interior and a solar-powered automatic chicken door operated with a light sensor. There's an 8-opening hen box, two levels of roosts, and a closed in loft for storage. The walls are 1.5 inches thick and the person door is extra reinforced against black bears (which frequently mark it with dirty paws). The pen is tight enough to keep out all the other predators we have: foxes, skunks, fishers, mink, ringtail cats, raccoons, bobcats, and mountain lions. It is our own design and was drafted using SketchUp Pro software.

I was out tonight again with my hens.... I noticed that many are getting red heads and waddles... their combs are growing very slowly....they are 17 weeks and 14 weeks old..... all are Australorps... I'm wondering about what age will they start laying? I've ordered the front roll laying boxes from Cutler Supply.... I'm getting concerned that I've waited too long to order... What do you think?
My BA's started laying (I believe) between 20-24 weeks.

My BA's started laying (I believe) between 20-24 weeks.

Looks like you probably timed it perfectly.

For comparison, my smaller BA (best layer in the flock) started at about 22 weeks. The BIG BA started 5 weeks later. Takes time to grow that big!

If mine are any example, they will start checking out the nest boxes before they lay. Several of mine also got "needy" meaning they would hang around me when I was in the barn but had not before. And then there is "The Squat". If you put your hand over their back, they will drop and flatten out like a pancake. Sure sign eggs will be coming in a week or two.

DH built a divider so we can house two different breeds. He also built a nice storage shelf in the back peak to hold bags of shavings.

I suspect they meant Class Three  its a coating that will last ten years.  The best wire is GAW....  or Galvanized After Weld....  The Galvanization is what protects the wire from rust.

Thank you! Galvanized for me, Ohio has many different sizes for sale. I think i have an obsession with it. Oh look Honey, hardware cloth!
