I rehomed 2 of my girls to the in-laws and made this to go with them, using free cabinets off cl and $35 of hardware and a treated post. They will be free range so just needed a safe place to sleep and lay.

Can't tell from the picture but the yard is totally fenced in. If we leave then the girls go in their predator proofed 8' x 24' run. We have only had the girls since February, but absolutely no sign of any predator yet.......knock on wood.

That sounds good. However, in the suburbs we didn't have any predators sighted yet either. Until...one night driving home at 2 a.m. we saw a raccoon the size of a goat crawling out of the street rain gutter! Since then we've taken notice of several roadkill possums and young raccoons on the street from time to time. The predators are out there, even on our city streets, so we close up the chickens tight at night and make it impossible for digging critters to get into the coop. During the day we have 5 doghouses, a popup canopy, a couple makeshift plywood lean-to's and lawn furniture and potted plants for the chickens to hide while free-ranging the yard.

For our first coop we had a paver stone patio all around it and it saved our chickens from stray dogs trying to break into the coop or trying to dig under the little coop:

5 years later we put a larger coop in the same location -- it has heavier kennel wire walls, cement slab for the coop run floor, and a roofed patio over the entire coop - very easy to hose down poop from the slab once a week:

A few hiding places for the free-ranging backyard chickens:

Here's a picture of my coop, pretty much all done minus some final paint and trim. Designed and built it myself after scouring this forum for weeks. Extremely happy with how it turned out.

It houses 3 ducks and we had 6 chickens (3 Rhode Island reds and 3 Plymouth rocks). Two of our Reds turned out to be Roosters so we had to rehome them, we live in the town limits and aren't allowed roosters.
