WHOOO HOOOO! I finally got one!!!

I didn't get to check last night because it was too dark. This morning when I let the girls out, I looked. (You know it is sort of disappointing to look day after day and see the nest boxes perfectly undisturbed with your golf balls or fake eggs sitting in there just like you left them.) So when I peaked in, I noticed that the straw was all messed up and the golf balls were pushed aside, and there it was!!! A perfect little brown egg from my Red Star that just started squatting on Saturday. Someone had said that it takes 4 weeks from the time you notice the squatting so I wasn't really expecting it. She is 20 weeks old as of January 31st! I have two EE's and an Australorp that are 23 weeks and they haven't even started squatting.

I like the posts with pictures so I am going to add several here.

Here she is at 6 weeks old.

Here she is this morning. She is also the alien chicken as my avatar. She is so nosey I can hardly get her to back up from the camera. She also appears to be the Alpha hen.

Here it is. My hand was a little moist so you can see the brown through the bloom where my fingers touched it. So excited I had sweaty palms even in 35 degree weather. Kind of embarrasing.

Yes that is a beer cap, I didn't have a quarter handy. The beer cap was from my meat marinade, honest! The other brown egg is a Costco Organic egg just for comparison.

Congrats and welcome to the 1st egg club.I know exactly what you went through. I lurked forever and could not wait to post my 1st. 6 of my 8 girls have laid their first egg beginning in Jan. Everyday is a surprise when I check the nest boxes. My EE just laid her 1st yesterday! I am now waiting on my BO and Welsummer for their 1st eggs.. It sure is the little things that brighten the day.

Bad news...I was hoping the girls(23 wks) would keep their legs together a little while longer so the eggs would be bigger, but they had other ideas. The good news...Our chickens are telling us that SPRING is right around the corner!! Yay! And, after all, eggs are eggs and I love them...so I'll just have to eat twice as many of these tiny ones 'til the babies grow up a little!

Okay, we have been getting one light brown egg a day out of 11 hens! All 6 months old now. 3 BCMs, 4 Austrolorps, 2 banties, and 2 Easter Eggers. We also have one meatie who we saved from freezer camp because she was sweet. She is now ginormous... Anyways, we switched from Layena to our local feed company's Omega Veggie Layer pellet 5 days ago. 17% protein... This is what we got today! Two of my BCMs gave us eggs, along with the usual brown, but the HUGE one was a double yolker! It froze before we found it, or I'd have better pics of it

The two darker ones look darker, but we needed the flash to make the pic come out...

Yay! Two more of our hens started laying. They both started squatting about 2 weeks ago. They're 21 week old Speckled Sussex. I set up a camera and went out there frequently to find out who was laying, and now I know!

This is Jasmine's first egg, next to a store bought and a quarter:

Also, monday morning and wednesday afternoon, we found two mystery eggs. The first one was crushed, but the second one was fine. We're still wondering who it was laid by. It's pretty big:

From my white leghorn x new hampshire - just short of 20 weeks.
My first ever eggie.

We got our first blue egg this morning -- laid in the run!

That's it beside our RIR/hybrid egg. There's 24g in the difference. The blue egg is seriously tiny!

Wow,

we got our 1st eggs from our Cochins, and Barred Rocks, not sure which laid them we have 2 of each breed.

Left is a jumbo store bought, center I think cochin, and right barred rock

18 weeks old and one of the 29 hens dropped an egg on the ground in the coop today. I think it might have even done it while I was in the coop building the nest boxes.
