WHOOO HOOOO! I finally got one!!!
I didn't get to check last night because it was too dark. This morning when I let the girls out, I looked. (You know it is sort of disappointing to look day after day and see the nest boxes perfectly undisturbed with your golf balls or fake eggs sitting in there just like you left them.) So when I peaked in, I noticed that the straw was all messed up and the golf balls were pushed aside, and there it was!!! A perfect little brown egg from my Red Star that just started squatting on Saturday. Someone had said that it takes 4 weeks from the time you notice the squatting so I wasn't really expecting it. She is 20 weeks old as of January 31st! I have two EE's and an Australorp that are 23 weeks and they haven't even started squatting.
I like the posts with pictures so I am going to add several here.
Here she is at 6 weeks old.
Here she is this morning. She is also the alien chicken as my avatar. She is so nosey I can hardly get her to back up from the camera. She also appears to be the Alpha hen.
Here it is. My hand was a little moist so you can see the brown through the bloom where my fingers touched it. So excited I had sweaty palms even in 35 degree weather. Kind of embarrasing.
Yes that is a beer cap, I didn't have a quarter handy. The beer cap was from my meat marinade, honest! The other brown egg is a Costco Organic egg just for comparison.
I have been lurking on the "First Egg Post" for about 4 weeks now. Now I got to join!!!! Yay!!! It is the little things in life isn't it?
