My black Sex Link hen, Miss Pepper, gave me the first egg from my new flock on Xmas Eve!

I wasn't aware that Black Sex Links laid purple eggs. Or is it just my computer screen?

Whats funny is my hubby, I was all for cooking them up and he was hemming around, so now we are waiting til we have our first dozen.... men!

I DID NOT let these guys in!! I think the door must have been ajar and Havoc the poodle pushed it open. I turned around and this is what was standing in the kitchen.

Pretty funny.

Some of our girls have made it to the back porch. The cat was sitting behind the glass door once and the girls high tailed pronto and they don't even know WHY they should be afraid of the cat.

Your husband wants to SuperSize his omelette or what? Eggs will keep for some good long time, especially if you don't wash them but if you only have one laying, that first dozen may take a looooooooong time. I went for "eat it sooner than later". After all, one reason to raise chickens is to get FRESH eggs.

I think its more like showing anyone who will stand still long enough what HIS chickens laid... lol well at least he doesn't fuss about how much money we have spent for 5 eggs OMG

but it's a hobby we both enjoy and I am sure that first taste of fresh home grown eggs will be worth it all. If I ever get to try them deep sigh LOL

Our Poms have big respect for the girls. oh they acted all big when the girls were little. I told them.. " one day" and that day came pretty quickly!

Probably your computer screen; they are light brown, almost pinkish. We've had three eggs now, to date; the third one was about 2 1/8" long, so they're getting a bit bigger. Terrible lighting, cheap camera probably didn't help the photo, either :)

as i saw the little egg in the corner of the nest box, my third thought was...
i bet BYC has someplace for me to post our very first egg!
(my first thought was thank you, sweet little mika, i hope that didn't freak you out!)
so here it is... first egg ever...

it's rather small and has a little smear of her blood... totally normal, yes?
(and how much would be abnormal?)
the reason i think it belongs to mika because she was almost as excited as me...
crowing up a storm and seeming very pleased with herself.
(am i imagining all of this!?)

my second thought was not out of superstition but out of curiosity...
it's funny because we just started them on the egg laying formula yesterday
(they will be 22 weeks on wednesday),
after pouring the feed bag, my husband asked, "can we eat the first egg?"
and i said, "what do you mean? like, should we give it to god?"
which started a whole chicken conversation i had never thought of....
that was not what he'd meant, but it got me thinking...
Is there a first egg tradition? (i would blow it out and decorate it, but then i'd be upset if it broke!)
thanks BYC for being someplace to go to post with pride egg 1...
do most people count their eggs??

LOL It has happened to me too. And I let them stay and hangout.

Today Star, our black star laid her 8 th egg in a row !! She was 19 weeks old when she started. Eggs are much larger then I expected for her age . A second girl started yesterday and laid again today. Star is head hen and always has been. First to perch, first to get out of the brooder box. Demands your attention so not surprised she laid first.

Stars are amazing! Mine started laying in September and she didn't skip a day until just last week. She gives use Jumbo sized eggs about half the time. She is also the leader of our small flock. Love her!
