Squatting hens is the funniest thing. When my Cochin squats, she makes silly grunting noises. When my Australorp squats, she stomps her feet and presses her body against the ground.

When you walk up to your chicken & she legit squats. She'll crouch down low & will look silly - she's letting you(the head rooster of course) know she's willing


Some of my girls even follow me to continue to squat in my path & they've been laying for a few months now too! It's always a silly time working outside

ok still new to all this, I have heard of the egg song, so what is the egg squat?

It is one of those "you'll know it when you see it" things

GENERALLY (*), being prey animals, they will not want you to touch them so if you put your hand over them, they run off. But when they have matured to laying age, instead of running off they will drop like a rock and look flat with their wings out slightly like you just smacked them down. Some of mine will do it if I just happen to change direction while walking at the "right" time and distance from them.

Sooo we have another first today. I had the opportunity to get a quartet of quail! On the way back I heard them make a few noises, nothing crazy....
Got home and when I opened the box to put them in their hut there it was!!! My first quail egg

Those quail eggs are so pretty. They remind me of picture Jasper...

As for the squat thing... I have 2 girls laying (my others are too young). One of my girls likes a few nice deep rubs and then she is done and runs of fluffing her feathers. My other girl, you can keep rubbing and rubbing and she doesn't finish. She gives up and just wanders off... A few times I can get her to fluff her feathers at the end... Just some girls are easier then others

My girls like a good rub when they squat too. They love when I rub under their wings and at the sides of their tail end. They kinda purr and fan their tails out. It's so funny, each of them had a signature squat.
