Woohoo, Juliet laid her first egg today! :)

The girls were in their mobile run, and she (I swear) was trying to tell me she wanted back in her coop/run, so I let them back in and she ran for the nest box as if to say "gotta go, gotta go, gotta go right now!". Then she started "purring" loudly and scratching around for about 45 minutes. I kept checking on her and after about the 5th time, went out and found this (I love how she's checking it out):

When you walk up to your chicken & she legit squats. She'll crouch down low & will look silly - she's letting you(the head rooster of course) know she's willing ;)

Some of my girls even follow me to continue to squat in my path & they've been laying for a few months now too! It's always a silly time working outside
Maybe I can get your opinion on this, I am still trying to figure out all their behaviors, I got a new girl a few weeks ago, My roo walked around her with one wing stuck out and a did like a cirlce around her on one foot, it was the strangest thing I have ever seen, I saw him do it to my other Ameraucana just recently. Is this some sort of mating or dominance thing. Just wondering lol

Finally!

Our first egg - this is not from one that we raised from chicks, but from a Blue Copper Marans that we brought home over Christmas that is about a month older than our girls I'd say. I think she's about 20 weeks?

She's a Marans, so I would assume that they will get darker as time goes on, The egg is rough with dark speckles :)

How exciting! I think my cuckoo marans will probably be the last one to lay. My flock was 20 weeks old on the 19th. Two are squatting, but not the marans, of course. Figures, the one I'm most excited for and I have to wait the longest for it!

Been a while, and I want to congratulate everyone on their beautiful eggs!!!

Squatting hens is the funniest thing. When my Cochin squats, she makes silly grunting noises. When my Australorp squats, she stomps her feet and presses her body against the ground.
I agree, but I also love it because they're so sweet and let me pet them, and usually, I can't resist picking them up for a hug ;)

Congratulations!!! Yaaay!

My girls like a good rub when they squat too. They love when I rub under their wings and at the sides of their tail end. They kinda purr and fan their tails out. It's so funny, each of them had a signature squat.
I was shocked when our dominant hen semi squatted for me yesterday, I hope that means she'll lay today! ??? LOL The other one has been the only layer that I know of so far??

Not my very first ones. Been getting about 1 egg a day for this last week. Last night I got this surprise!
3 eggs at once? Lovely! We're all wanting eggs, and only one is laid per day so far, so everyone fights over them, LOL Can't wait to get more in one day!

My first egg 1/19/13

Yaaay, ain't it purty! How big was it?

It looks so pretty speckled like that! And your daughter is adorable too! Love your hens, so pretty, that blue is really sweet!

That's the courting dance! I haven't really seen any of mine doing it yet, but I've read about it many times!

This is our first egg that we've been patiently waiting for ....We think it is from Beauty
Yaay, congratulations!!!!

LOL, my cockerels are 14 weeks, and today when I cracked one of Flutter's eggs open, it had a clear and large bullseye! I can not believe those young'ens are actually inseminating her! I was so shocked this morning! They hadn't even crowed yet! Though this morning, one did honk like a goose! LOL, made me crack up!

At 5 mths and 1 day old we got our first egg!!!!

It's literally a hair over 1 3/4" long and light brown. At first I thought it must be from Izzy, our Black Australorp, because she squats like mad when we go up to pet her. But a friend suggested, and I agree, it must be from our little Meep, black frizzle cochin bantam! Perfectly formed and so pretty!

It seems she must have scratched at the one side of it after laying, kind of a "Omg, what is this thing that just came out of me?!?!" way. As the scratched aren't deep enough to suggest she was pecking it in an attempt to break it open.

Here it is in my hand:

And here's where I found it in the coop (it needs a clean, excuse the mess!):

I opened up the nest boxes and got them set up that day. :)

What an adorable egg

How do your chickens do with the pellets? I was thinking about using them in the coop but am afraid the chickens ducks n guineas will eat them!!

We got our first egg today!! My sweet Buff Orpington layed it right where it's supposed to go. What a good girl!

It's so cute and tiny and perfect!

This is Starbuck, the Buff Orpington. We got our chicks from our local farm store on Sept. 1st, so that makes them just over 20 weeks old. I'm expecting Boomer, the Rhode Island Red to join in soon!

Here's the egg compaired to an extra-large one from Costco. I'm glad I didn't buy eggs when I went last weekend!

Whoohoooo!!! I'm so excited!
