Finally!!! So happy. A nice pick me up from the dreary Seattle weather today. I don't know whose it is but it is not our bantam Easter Egger...

Yaay, congratulations! At 5 mths and 1 day old we got our first egg!!!!
It's literally a hair over 1 3/4" long and light brown. At first I thought it must be from Izzy, our Black Australorp, because she squats like mad when we go up to pet her. But a friend suggested, and I agree, it must be from our little Meep, black frizzle cochin bantam! Perfectly formed and so pretty!
It seems she must have scratched at the one side of it after laying, kind of a "Omg, what is this thing that just came out of me?!?!" way. As the scratched aren't deep enough to suggest she was pecking it in an attempt to break it open.
Here it is in my hand:
And here's where I found it in the coop (it needs a clean, excuse the mess!):
I opened up the nest boxes and got them set up that day.![]()
Perfect! 130 grams isn't bad! LOLWe got our first egg today!! My sweet Buff Orpington layed it right where it's supposed to go. What a good girl!
It's so cute and tiny and perfect!
This is Starbuck, the Buff Orpington. We got our chicks from our local farm store on Sept. 1st, so that makes them just over 20 weeks old. I'm expecting Boomer, the Rhode Island Red to join in soon!
Here's the egg compaired to an extra-large one from Costco. I'm glad I didn't buy eggs when I went last weekend!
Whoohoooo!!! I'm so excited!

Pretty! Like a little gem! Congratulations!
Theotherfoot... Love your chicken names. Do you have others? Great egg... You have a very pretty girls. I want to get at least one Buff Orphington this year.
Congrats on the egg. Wish you plenty more...![]()
I haven't had any problems with them pecking at them at all. The first few days after you put the pellets in they are quite hard, but they break down slowly and slowly spread around so that it isn't rough on their feet. I was worried at first about them walking on it, so much that I even contemplated taking it all back out again. The first couple days the biggest gals were very unsure about this pellet stuff, and walked very stiff-legged on it, but they quickly got used to it and these days it doesn't phase them at all. It also lasts quite a long time. I have had the pellets in there for at least 2 months now. Not bad for $5! Oh and I have silly gals that refuse to roost to sleep and they hunkered down together on the pellets to sleep without an issue, so I can't help thinking I was being silly worrying about them being hard at first. Hope that helps! I definitely plan on continuing to use the pellets btwWhat an adorable eggHow do your chickens do with the pellets? I was thinking about using them in the coop but am afraid the chickens ducks n guineas will eat them!!![]()
