we are getting one egg a day from our four PR (production reds) who are 17 weeks. We have a total of five now, and each day is just as exciting as the first one found five days ago...I am EGGCITED

for all of you!

I know family and friends do not understand and I know before I started my flock in April I may have been "ho hum" about someone else's news...but people really don't have a clue how great it is to have chickens! I know now and tell everyone they are NOT "just chickens"....

I am starting to feel bad for this pullet. I haven't measured the other eggs but this one was HUGE!

These are the 3rd day and 4th day eggs from our newly laying RIR hen.
The first two were pretty much the same size as the third one.

As newbies we are amazed at the difference in the two.

No wonder her eggs are so big! She lays double yolkers.

One egg a day for the past 4 days!!! I've been taking pics of each one to compare...also weighed three of the 4, couldn't weigh egg 2 cuz my son cracked it open before I could stop him to weigh it LOL...

Day 1: This egg weighed 1.2 ounces


Day 2: No weight (thanks son! lol)


Day 3: Weight on this one was 0.9 ounces


Day 4: Weighed 1.1 ounces



Yesterday when I tried to take the egg, I got pecked LOL...and she did it again today, so I marked one side of the egg with an "x", took it inside real quick to weigh and take a picture, and put it back in the nest. It's the only one she gets to keep!!

Found another egg today from a different hen! That's two in one day, and I only got my first egg a few days ago!

The new egg on the left, the egg from this morning on the right.



The new egg is really weird, like it didn't harden right or something, I don't know. It was also the color of skin, not brown like the others I've gotten.



I went out to check again a few minutes ago, and I found an egg broken up against the lip of the nesting box...I only saw it cuz I put my head IN the box...I think it was laid yesterday and was so fragile it got stepped on and broke, because it hadn't been eaten. The shell itself was rubbery.

My daughters hen, Phoebe, laid her very first egg this week ! She is a 17 week old Gold Sex Link and matured faster than our 2 Black Sex Links, which are actually a little older than she is. We thought she might be ready to lay, because she made a nest in the nest box. She piled all the shavings into the corner and had been acting different for several days prior. Then right before she went to lay her beautiful egg, she got really loud and chatty. I am going to try to post pictures, let's see if it works ! All of y'alls egg pictures are so beautiful and exciting. I had no idea how much fun this would be !! It was better than Christmas morning when the kids ran up and found that first egg. The next day she laid two smaller eggs with thin shells, one was broken and the other was a little misshapen ...but pretty good for a first timer ! Congratulations to all on their first eggs. I hope the magic doesn't end, is it always this fun ?
