This was my first egg. From one of my buff orphingtons and she literally laid in right in front of me! I was tickled pink!

After a dog took out 6 of my girls and 2 turkeys I was more then a little upset. Then last week, one of my 2 remaining girls had bloody stools... A search of the threads got me the name of a special de-wormer and it cleared up. The care and spoiling my girls (I bring them inside every night since those dogs have not yet been caught) has paid off. This afternoon I got our first egg!

Considering what has happened I am so egg-cited to get an egg.

This is in comparison to a large store bought egg.

If it had not been for this website and all the wonderful information that was here I may have lost another chicken. It was also great to have so many people who are so supportive in this crazy life we play in. Thanks to everyone for being here.
congrats

Yeah me too. Well I haven't lost a chicken, but all the valuable free info here. I started reading well before I ordered my first chicks in April. Probably would have eventually lost chickens to predators because I had reasoned the existing 2x4 welded wire on the horse stall was plenty. Just had to replace the half high swinging door with something more suitable for a coop. Read some on coop design and "tell how predators got your chickens" and off to get some 1/2" hardware cloth. Just one example of many, MANY things I have learned from those in the know.

That is why I forked over for the Golden Feather membership. I've gotten I don't know how many multiples of $20 worth of information on BYC. Well deserving of my support to help keep the site running.

Hey all you BYCers! Sad news in the coop, one of our Leghorns died yesterday [some Christmas present]! She was hunched over and we think it had a fever, will all our other hens catch it or should they be alright?

My black Sex Link hen, Miss Pepper, gave me the first egg from my new flock on Xmas Eve!

She was a heavily pecked, FREE rescue hen that we adopted, healed up... and now she's gorgeous, though surly. We love her anyway.

Just getting around to posting some pictures of our first egg/eggs! I am so amazed at how just a few short months ago I brought these guys home in a little box! Christmas eve we found our first egg actually first eggs as there were two in the same nest box. Since then we have gotten one a day. The girls were 19 1/2 weeks old. More surprising is how cold it has been and she still started laying. I told my hubby its because of his "EGGCellent coop he built.

If you look really close, you can see little Phoebe ( Freebe) in her little cast

We think its Rosie that is laying, she is a production red????? but the most mature.

The middle egg is a store bought large... not bad for first eggs??? Proud Mamma here LOL Whats funny is my hubby, I was all for cooking them up and he was hemming around, so now we are waiting til we have our first dozen.... men!

I DID NOT let these guys in!! I think the door must have been ajar and Havoc the poodle pushed it open. I turned around and this is what was standing in the kitchen.

Yes Rosie and Star... the trouble makers

I can't wait to see who lays next
