bobk, usually the only difference between grower feed and layer feed is the calcium. They both have at least 16% protein, with adequate carbs, fat, vitamins and minerals, but the layer feed has added calcium needed for the shells. Therefore, you have three options: switch to the layer feed, continue with grower feed and offer the free-choice calcium, or mix the two types of feed and offer the calcium. My 9 girls where 18 weeks on Thursday. So I took the cover off of their nesting boxes and lo and behold today I got my first 2 eggs!! they look to be good quality with thick shells.
I still have them on grower feed ,in fact I have a full bag left. do I switch them to layer feed right away or can I mix the grower and layer to use it all up? I am feeding free choice oyster shells starting today.

That looks like a very nice olive green egger....We have raised 2 chickens up from 1 week old chicks, this is a first for us. We have older hens that we adopted at the same time and have been getting eggs since July. This is our very first egg from our EE chick Ginger.
We had hoped she'd lay blue, but this is such a lovely green, and our first, so it is hardly disappointing.
This was taken at 24 weeks. She is over 27 weeks now and laid her egg on the 27th of December. Merry Christmas to me!!
