My son told me that our RSL, Jasmine, had built a nest and had been sitting in it for a couple of days. He said he would go and sit with her to keep her company. I go inside and hear a commotion, I was sure he was torturing the poor chicken! Instead he is running at me with a beautiful egg! He said she had 2 others there too. He fetched the other two and here you see our very first found eggs from our RSL cutie, Jasmine!

This isn't exactly my first egg, but it's my first egg from a hen who I raised from a chick. I got some 10 month old already laying white leghorns a couple months ago, and lost all but one. She's my superchickie. She took a while to start laying, but she's layed for me every day for the past 20 days. She even layed one today after getting carried off by a fox this morning (long story, may post it in predators and pests). Anyway..when I checked the coop this evening I not only found that my leghorn had returned, and had layed an egg in her box, but I found this little brown egg on the floor of the coop.

I hate not knowing who laid it. I have one hen that I got at a few weeks age back in Februry. The chicks were labeled RIR, but she's not near red enough to be a RIR. She looks like a production red or red star. She's huge and meaty. Then I have a RIR that I got as a day old in February or March (I really have to start writing hatch dates down), but her comb is not very red yet. I assumed it was Big Red the older red hen, but then I realized that maybe it was my black bantam cochin who I got as a day old at the end of January. From what I've read bantam cochin eggs are light brown though. Those are really the only possiblities as the rest of my chickens have a ways to go yet. I also witnessed my frizzle roo trying to mate with the production/rsl and her allowing him to. Anyway..on to the picture. It's such a cute egg!

For comparison..the egg on the far left is a store bought extra large weighing in at 2.5 ounces. The middle egg is from my white leghorn weighing in at 2 ounces. The little brown one weighs 1.5 ounces. I didn't even notice the darker brown speckles til I took it out of the fridge to take a picture. Thought it was dirt but it won't come off even with my fingernail (didn't want to put too much pressure on the egg and break it), but the speckles are raised. Is that normal for a speckled egg?

I tried to save my first egg from a chick I raised, but cracked it while blowing it out. She was eaten by a feral cat a couple months ago,

and I blew out and saved her last one. Poor Martha. She was my favorite. (don't tell my other chooks I said that!)

We got our first egg yesterday from Gail, one of two red sex-links. She laid it by the pop-door. Dear hubby found her in the act today and she was actually in the community nest box. She's 18 weeks old. Now I just need to fend off the 5-year-old who insists on eating all the eggs before the rest of us have a chance...

YAY!! I am so excited! Got my first egg today!! My chickens will be 18 weeks old tomorrow! I was so surprised! Not sure who laid this egg but I am almost positive it was one of my Australorps. It's so cute!! She actually did make it to the nest too.. I am so proud of her!

It finally happened!!! My girls are 20 weeks today and I got my first egg. I suspect it is from one of my RIR's as she has been squatting a few days now and was checking out the nest box last night when I was putting them away for the night. I showed her the fake marble eggs and she went inside the nest box and looked around. I found the egg in the same box. I can't believe how exciting this is.

Are they supposed to be speckled at first and smooth out with time or is this white speckling permanent?
