Post Your Rare Birds Pictures

ya not that bad are the chicks pretty hardy or do they die easily and do you raise them the same as emus and other ratities

They are pretty tough after 6 months. The biggest problem they have is developing leg issues as they are growing. Emus, Ostrich and Rheas all have the same darn problems. I think my friends have narrowed it down to rickets, which is a vitamin D deficiency. So we keep the birds until 6 months to give them time to get past the potential leg problems. Otherwise, Cassowaries are one of the toughest birds out there. They NEVER get sick, and are immune to most diseases other birds get, as well as most virus's. Not alot of research has been done on Cassowaries, but I know Ostriches have one of the most advanced immune systems of any animal, and I think Cassowaries do as well. They just cant take extreme cold, snow or ice. Their toes can freeze off if they walk on frozen precipitation, and if temps get below the 30s often, then its a good idea to hang heat lamps in their shed or have a heated shelter for them.

Just curious for future reference, but do you ever take animal/bird trades as part of payment for your cassowary chicks? Beautiful photos!

Here's my lewis silver breeders.I have a trio from them from last season.I am looking for another pair so I can switch the males.Mine are Mel Royal lines,so I would need someone elses line.
In N.H.,Tony.

I love the Lewis, I rarely ever see these guys around anymore, and I think alot of people have crossed them out with Kalij or True Silvers. I did have a friend that bred them years ago, but he ended up selling out of everything due to old age unfortunately.

Depends on what you have, but yes I love trading. Im trying to get more into exotic mammals like small species of monkeys, lemurs, porcupines, hyena's, zebra's, wallabies, etc..

You would love them. I've never known anyone that bought Cassowaries that regretted it. Alot of people do always ask why would you want something that cant go in with or pet, and I simple ask them why would anyone want fish in a aquarium? lol. Same principle... They are beautiful to look at and show off even though we cant have physical contact with them. Now if I ever get my hands on some Single Wattled Cassowaries, then my lifes goal will be complete and I can die happy haha. Single Wattles are just amazing! My friend has been able to get 3, and 2 had to be imported. Right now they are the only 3 in the US, and im really hoping he can breed some.

ya those are awesome i just want a pair of cassowary to breed i know they are endangered and would love to help the species out. i dont even mind that you cant go into there cage i think there so cool they look like dinosaurs i love it, i am only 15 but love birds. i mainly raise chickens and ducks but i want those big birds like emus and ostriches, yet the top of my list is to get a pair of cassowarys i will probably get some emus first since there cheaper but when am older i am getting cassowarys and by the way what do you feed your adult birds and when you hatch eggs do you let the parents raise them or do you incubate
